About the programme

We’ll give you hands-on responsibility from the moment you start, as well as formal leadership development and an opportunity to study towards the Institute of Leadership Management Level 5 Operational Manager qualification. It’s all about developing your leadership skills, raising your strategic awareness and showing you how to build the foundations for a great career in Operational Management.

Over the two-year programme, you’ll work in one of our Operations functions to understand our business inside out. In your first year of the programme, you’ll be involved in the delivery of key strategic and cross-functional projects, learning the overall operational pipeline of Royal Mail giving you the opportunity to make a real difference in your area.

By your second year, you’ll be taking on a management role, leading around 40 people and manging change in one of 1,400 operational units around the country. You’ll lead and motivate your team to continuously improve performance against a range of performance measures.

Throughout the programme, experienced managers will set you performance goals, while a buddy, mentor and HR Business Partner will act as your support network.

We work right across the UK, so our Operations graduates need to be flexible to travel within your operational area. We’re looking for people to cover areas across the UK. We’ll talk this through with you nearer the time and try to place you as close to your preferred location as possible. All our graduates receive generous benefits, which include an annual bonus (depending on personal and company performance), a pension plan with company contribution; a business laptop and phone, and much more.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for people who are confident, self-motivated and resilient. If leadership comes naturally, this could be the right programme for you. You’ll need to be a people person and thrive as part of a team, enjoying fast paced working environments with a genuine desire to manage change while leading and coaching your team. We’re on an exciting transformational journey and you’ll need to thrive on the challenges that are a typical part of that and get excited about influencing the stakeholders and bringing the people on the journey that make it a reality. The programme will help you develop important leadership skills, encouraging you to get involved and handle any challenge that comes your way.

An eye for detail is important as you’ll learn how to manage resources and budgets – all with a view to ensuring your team is working at its very best to achieve an excellent service for our customers.

You’ll need a minimum 2:2 degree in any subject, a full UK driving licence and you must be willing to travel across your operational area.
