Description of assignment

A Robotic Revolution is ongoing and we need you to empower us with enhanced robotic technology!

Vanderlande builds robotic solutions that pick items for e-commerce systems, palletizers and depalletizers for warehouses, singulators for parcel sortation systems and autonomous mobile robots that sort baggage at airports with our FLEET solution.

With the FAST (new Fronties in Autonomous Systems Technology) project Vanderlande collaborates with the TU/e and multiple non-competing companies. The aim is to develop mobile robots with increased flexibility, task awareness, and the ability to reason about the state of the environment, enabling them to operate robustly in changing environments.

The project runs for four years and started in January 2018. TU/e has appointed four PhD students to the project, who will be assisted by many Master’s students. The research focuses on developing

  • a semantic world model (including perception),
  • motion planning
  • and human-machine interaction and intention estimation

Your graduation assignment will be in line with one of these three areas. You will be supervised by 1 PhD at the TU/e and a robotic engineer at Vanderlande.

Description of the department

The mission of Robotics R&D is to enable autonomous robotic solutions that add value to our warehousing, parcel & postal and airport customers. This is done with research, development and smart collaboration on relevant technologies. Our focus areas are the mechatronics, navigation, cognitive ability, perception, human interaction and system development of robotic solutions.

Tasks / Responsibilities

Your tasks and responsibilities will be depending on the specific assignment, which is to be aligned with the project goals. Your research will include:

  • Integration of designed algorithms on our robot platform
  • Verification of functioning and comparison against current state-of-the-art algorithms
  • Reporting of findings and advising on future work
