Vacancy Information

A 3-year PhD studentship is available at UCL Department of Mechanical Engineering for an enthusiastic student interested in automated and semi-automated architecture generation in CAPSD processes.

Studentship Description

Various methods have been developed for automated and semi-automated architecture generation in CAPSD processes. Question remains how to differentiate designs and how to deal with large amount of options (many unrealistic) these generate. Methods have been developed to apply mathematical approaches to analysing architectures in abstract planes, e.g. networks, UofM grid approach. These are mainly intended as an additional discriminator / analysis for automated approaches. UCL network-based analysis (IMDC) sought to apply these abstractions as an aid to designer understanding.

UCL Approaches:

DBBA approach to design is instead more a designer-centric approach to modelling and information management in an architecturally centred CAPSD approach. ZEOLIT tool is a derivative of the DBBA which seeks to limit the detail and enforce uncertainty. Each of these approaches has inherited social aspects of the wider research, design & procurement community in which they have been developed and applied.

PSD has been identified as an example of sketching in ship design, with PSD representations being fluid/forgiving/functional, but limited by current PSD tools (including implementations of the DBBA).

Person Specification

The PhD will examine the applications of these abstractions in a designer-centred sketching approach to CAPSD. The research objective is to develop and demonstrate a novel approach and software toolset that allows, “in-stride” application of developing abstraction, modelling and analysis approaches to early stage ship designs, developed in the typical timescale of UCL concept design projects, and providing an effective reply to the requirements for a sketching tool laid out by Pawling and Andrews (2011).
