Many engineers who decide to progress through the apprenticeship route find that working during the day on projects whilst attending part time study provides an invaluable experience and enables a work focused programme of learning delivering increased technical skills and behaviours that are invaluable for their career.

You will be studying a 4-year Digital and Technology Solutions Level 6 (Degree Apprenticeship) at University Centre Weston, who will provide an excellent programme of study on a day-release basis. Starting salary on offer is £22,000 plus additional benefits.

What will I be doing?

The work is highly varied and challenging. It will involve analysis, modelling, as well as supporting our consulting work. Defining the problems as well as solving them. Developing solutions as well as reporting. Desk work as well as field work and opportunities to shadow design team and client meetings. Applying emerging technologies as well as steering the development of in-house software tools. You would be working on international projects with first principles-based problem solving, advanced data analytics, predictive modelling, and simulations.

  • 70-80% analysis and simulations
  • 10-20% steering, testing or potentially developing software
  • 10-20% report writing / reviewing / site visit / client meeting
  • 10-20% group / marketing / collaboration and research activities

What will I learn whilst at work?

BuroHappold experts will provide training so that you will gain experience in:

  • CAD and BIM programs including AutoCad, Rhino3D and grasshopper, sketch-up, Revit etc.
  • Crowd modelling software and analysis including our in-house simulation tools (SmartMove, SmartProcessAnalyser etc.)
  • Programming in C#/C++ and javascript to develop and extend our data analysis tools to help solve real world problems

What do I bring to this role?

  • Strong data analytics, visualisation and statistical analysis skills and interest
  • Experience within graphics, 3D modelling or GIS environment is desirable, but not essential
  • Good communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Highly numerate
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Access and familiarity with the Windows, OSX and Linux Operating Systems, major web browsers and browser development tools, and mobile devices and applications would be desirable
  • Awareness of software development tools and web technologies including HTML
  • The ability to work well in a team, as well as focus on your own self development
  • A passion for technology
  • Confident, enthusiastic, proactive and 'can do' attitude
  • A positive and inquisitive approach and the confidence to ask and respond to challenging questions
  • An ability to think "outside the box" and solve problems of a multidisciplinary nature

What qualifications do I need in order to enrol

You will typically have:

  • Minimum of GCSE C or equivalent in English and maths
  • You should have a Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in Computing
  • You will ideally already have three A Levels at grade B or above, preferably in related subjects such as mathematics, science and IT, or a BTEC Extended Diploma at MMM, or other qualifications equivalent to 96 UCAS tariff points, in addition to Level 2 English and mathematics (GCSE Grade C/4 or above)
  • Applications from those who do not meet these requirements but who have demonstrable and relevant work experience will be considered on an individual basis, subject to complete a programming assessment set by UCW

Due to the funded nature of this programme, applicants with undergraduate degrees in computing/IT/Electronic Engineering will not be eligible
