Energy storage is key to enable the energy transition. Heat storage has large potential, but its benefits can only be reached by solving complex interactions of heat and mass transport in the active materials. Can you feel the heat?

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

In a current project, a way of enabling mass production of materials for thermochemical storage systems is being investigated through so-called ‘energy pads’. To optimize these energy pads, measurement of the pads’ properties under relevant conditions is necessary. Mainly, thermal characteristics need to be elucidated as a function of materials size, shape and packing density inside an energy pad. But because of changing materials compositions during measurement – an inherent property of salt hydrates as typically used for thermochemical storage purposes is hydration / dehydration as a function of temperature and water vapor pressure – measuring effective thermal conductivity through an energy pad is not trivial. Your main task is to design and build a measurement setup that can do precisely this, including accuracy and precision analysis, and discrimination between conductivity, convection and radiation.

WHAT DO WE REQUIRE OF YOU?

Generally, your tasks involve a short initial literature review on thermochemical storage materials and their behavior, designing and building the setup as mentioned above, and performing validation experiments with it. In addition, some analysis and technical evaluation of the obtained results, as well as reporting at the end of the internship through an official TNO-report and an oral department presentation (both in English) will be required. For administrative matters, it is common that a standard internship-agreement is set-up by you, TNO and sending educational institute, stating mutual obligations and rights.

Although you will be guided by a daily supervisor, a large degree of self-dependence is expected.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT OF YOUR WORK SITUATION?

The Energy Conversion & Storage research team of the TNO department of Sustainable Process & Energy Systems consists of 10 enthusiastic people that are working on the development of compact thermal energy storage reactors for building (heating and domestic hot water) and industrial (high temperature energy) applications. Developments of integrated reactors (where the loading and unloading of the active material i.e. the dehydration and hydration of salt hydrates takes place), as well as peripheral components of the various reactor systems (mainly heat exchangers) are ongoing. Daily supervision will be in the hands of one of these colleagues.
