At Addleshaw Goddard, we endeavour to make each work placement scheme a valuable experience for our students. We offer a week long Easter scheme in Edinburgh and London, and two week Summer schemes in Edinburgh/Glasgow, Leeds, London and Manchester.
During the scheme you will experience life as a trainee at AG. Students are allocated a department to sit in and swap into a different department in the second week (if undertaking the Summer scheme). During your time in the department you will be supervised by an experienced solicitor who will welcome you to the department and allocate you work. You will also be paired up with a trainee buddy throughout the duration of the scheme who will be on hand to help.
The scheme will be varied. As well as informative sessions, group exercises, assessed work and plenty of time at your desk, there will be a number of social events attended by a range of people across the office to give you a chance to really get to know the people and culture at AG.
We offer training contracts to successful placement scheme students and encourage applicants to apply for our scheme.
We provide all trainees with a substantial and competitive range of benefits. These include:
• Dental cover
• Gym allowance
• Season ticket loan
• Interest free loan
• Bonus scheme

At Addleshaw Goddard (AG), we have created a high performance culture that is fully inclusive, supportive and where we expect the best of each other. Ultimately, we want to enable all our people to succeed, regardless of their gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, disability, religious practice or any other perceived difference. Our Diversity ambition is promoted and receives support at the most senior level of our business through our Board sponsor.
The AG Diversity Programme is implemented by a dedicated HR team, Partner sponsors and volunteers from across the firm. Much of our work focuses around the areas of gender, social mobility and ethnicity. However, we also provide a comprehensive package of support for parents and carers, have a flourishing a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) network, and run an ongoing campaign to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing issues. Agile working is also a key focus for AG, enabling a greater work-life balance for everyone, not only those with caring responsibilities.
We continue to invest and work hard to build a reputable Diversity Programme in support of a fully inclusive culture, and our commitment has been consistently recognised over the years. In the 2017/18 sector awards season, the AG Diversity Programme has achieved the following external recognition:
•Times Top 50 Employers for Women 2018
•UK Diversity Legal Awards 2017 - AG won the 'Managing Diverse Talent' award and gained recognition for its innovative Returner Programme.
•HR in Law Awards 2018 - AG won awards for 'Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion' and the 'Grand Prix' top award for our D&I Programme.
Diversity Access Schemes – Networking & Sponsorships
At AG we believe in taking practical action wherever possible, connecting with a number of social mobility schemes and reputable networks designed to access untapped talent from non-traditional backgrounds.
AG is a signatory to the Social Mobility Business Compact, a government led initiative created to address elitism and improve social mobility by encouraging businesses to open up opportunities to everyone. AG continues to invest and partner with local community schools and networks which seek to raise the aspirations of young people and give access to quality work experience and internships. We nurture links with the Black Lawyers’ Directory, the Bright Network, Lawyers in Schools, Pathways to Law, PRIME and TARGETjobs Events.
AG promotes wider access to the legal profession through a variety of initiatives:
AG is a founder member of PRIME, an initiative where law firms provide a minimum number of quality work experience placements to underprivileged school-age students. We work closely with local schools across London, Leeds and Manchester (at both primary and secondary level) to inspire and help young people fulfil their potential. Each year, we invite around 40 students from years 12-13 to take part in our Legal Access Week.
Social Mobility Business Partnership (SMBP)
We are a member of the SMBP in both Manchester and Leeds, working with our clients and other businesses to meet our respective social mobility commitments. As a result, our Legal Access Week students now benefit from an additional week of commercial experience linking with 'in-house' legal teams at some very well-known companies.
Legal Access Scheme
Our award-winning Legal Access Scheme identifies bright BPP University Law School law students from unconventional or less privileged backgrounds, offering them a place on our summer placement programme. Since its creation, in 2007, 24 participants of the scheme have secured training contracts with us.
Legal apprenticeship scheme
We are at the forefront of apprenticeships in the legal profession and have developed a legal apprenticeship scheme in Manchester and Leeds. This provides an alternative route into the profession for those who do not wish to go down the 'traditional' university route. Our Head of Resourcing chairs the Trailblazers Apprenticeship in Law initiative, which includes a group focused on developing a solicitor apprenticeship.
City Solicitors Horizons
City Solicitors Horizons has been initiated by the City of London Solicitors' Company, City Solicitors' Educational Trust (CSET) and The Legal Education Foundation (TLEF), with the support of the City of London Law Society (CLLS) and leading law firms - including AG. Over the next three years, AG will support students from universities in London and the south east of England to take part in a three year programme alongside their undergraduate degrees. Each intake will benefit from mentoring lawyers and practical work experience.
