About this position
As modern manufacturing systems grow in complexity, traditional methods for scheduling and machine logistics struggle to handle real-world variability.
What will be your role?
Formal modeling tools like LSAT and dataflow graphs help structure system behavior but often neglect the uncertainty present in real operations, such as delays, maintenance, or stochastic processing times. This results in overly conservative designs based on worst-case assumptions, limiting performance and flexibility.
What we expect from you
This project aims to extend such formal models by incorporating stochastic behavior. The intern will investigate and implement algorithms that estimate timing properties, such as start and end times of activities, in the presence of uncertainty. These algorithms will be applied to activity graphs representing machine logistics and may include methods such as Monte Carlo simulation, importance sampling, or techniques from extreme value theory.
By propagating uncertainty through the model, we aim to produce probabilistic insights that inform system design and decision-making. The final goal is to develop a working prototype that demonstrates how timing under uncertainty can be computed efficiently and used to support more robust and realistic planning in high-tech manufacturing systems.
