Are you the data scientist who wants to connect AI and IoT into smart, scalable solutions for education and research? This could be a great opportunity for you!

In our AI & Sustainable Technology (SusTech) domain, the Internet of Things (IoT) plays a central role. We are seeking a data scientist with proven experience in simulation techniques and tools such as Siemens, MATLAB Simulink, Autodesk, and game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine. Using these tools, you’ll develop and test digital twins, IoT simulations, and virtual prototypes—before they’re applied in real-world settings. If you’re passionate about exploring the latest trends in AI and IoT, and know how to translate them into impactful, practical solutions, this is the job for you.

What are you going to do?

  • Develop end-to-end AI and IoT solutions: from concept and simulation to real-world implementation;
  • Build and test digital twins and virtual prototypes to optimize processes, products, and systems;
  • Translate business and research needs into scalable AI applications, including generative AI solutions like LLMs;
  • Work with Azure CI/CD, Git, Terraform, and API development for cloud integration;
  • Contribute to AI adoption within the organization, including coaching fellow data scientists;
  • Collaborate in multidisciplinary teams of data scientists, engineers, lecturers, and researchers.

Your Team

You’ll join an enthusiastic team of data scientists, engineers, lecturers, and researchers. Together, we work on optimizing and innovating education, research, and processes within Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. You’ll also be part of the DataLab federation—a network of around 20 data specialists who regularly meet to exchange knowledge and experiences. This means continuous learning and contributing to the growth of your colleagues.

Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences as an Employer

If you're ready to take the leap into higher education, we offer the ideal workplace for you. As the second-largest university of applied sciences in the Netherlands, we continue to grow significantly in the coming years—not just in size, but in impact. Our ambition is to become the most outstanding university of applied sciences in the Randstad region. To achieve this, we need dedicated professionals like you.

Are you the one we're looking for?

  • A completed Master’s degree in Computer Science, Econometrics, Mathematics, or another STEM field, or at least 5 years of relevant experience in ML development with Python;
  • Practical knowledge of the data science process (data collection, cleaning, model evaluation, implementation);
  • Experience designing generative AI solutions (e.g., LLMs) and advising independently on complex AI applications;
  • Proven experience with simulation tools such as Siemens, MATLAB Simulink, Autodesk, Unity, or Unreal Engine—preferably in IoT-related projects;
  • Experience with API development and building cloud solutions using CI/CD tools.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated ability to independently deliver complex AI solutions with measurable impact;
  • Affinity with topics related to logistics, ports and hinterland, and the energy transition;
  • Experience coaching other data scientists;
  • Excellent command of English; Dutch is a plus.

What do we offer you?

  • A one-year contract upon starting employment (D4 CAO HBO);
  • Salary in scale 11 between €4.535,76 and €6.359,47 gross per month (based on full-time employment), depending on experience and qualifications;
  • A contract of 16 hours per week. Possible extension to 24/32/40 hours per week;
  • 8% holiday allowance + 8,3% year-end bonus;
  • Up to 9 weeks of vacations (based on full-time);
  • 45 sustainable employability hours;
  • Hybrid working with attention to work-life balance;
  • Excellent pension scheme (ABP);
  • Bicycle scheme with tax benefits;
  • Compensation for internet, commuting, and working from home;
  • Laptop and home office facilities;
  • Extensive training and development opportunities;
  • An inclusive, inspiring work environment with room for innovation.
