Join our enthusiastic Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) team at the Research and Development of Weather and Climate models department (RDWK) as a Verification and Development Specialist! We are looking for a talented and motivated individual to make impactful contributions to the HARMONIE-AROME NWP system. Your work will play a key role in our collaboration with Denmark, Ireland, and Iceland through the United Weather Centres West (UWC-West) initiative.

What will you be doing?You will actively contribute to the preparation of the HARMONIE-AROME NWP system for incorporating data from the Infrared Sounder onboard the Meteosat Third Generation satellite, scheduled for availability between Q1 and Q2 2025. This involves investigating methods to optimize the use of Hyperspectral Infrared data.

Your key responsibilities will include exploring the viability of using Transformed Retrievals (TRs) in the HARMONIE-AROME 4D-Var data assimilation. You will collaborate closely with the UK MetOffice and the Eumetsat Numerical Weather Prediction Satellite Application Facility (NWP SAF) to assess the robustness of the TRs approach by comparing forecast skills between the UWC-W and UK MetOffice NWP systems. The work entails a total of 4 month secondment to the UK MetOffice.

Specifically, your role will encompass three main tasks:

  • Implementing the TRs approach in the HARMONIE-AROME 4D-Var.
  • Generating TRs from Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) radiances using existing software at the UK MetOffice, and assimilating these TRs and their observation operators in HARMONIE-AROME 4D-Var to validate this new approach.
  • Extending the NWP SAF 1D-Var package to estimate TRs and observation operators, along with atmospheric profiles, surface fields, cloud top pressure, and cloud fraction.

Additionally, you will document the technical implementation for generating and assimilating TRs and the results from the assimilation experiments. You will also refactor code to produce TRs and observation operators embedded in the NWP SAF 1D-Var package.

You'll work closely with the UK MetOffice and the Eumetsat NWP Satellite Application Facility (NWP SAF), implementing TRs in the HARMONIE-AROME 4D-Var code, generating TRs from Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) radiances, and validating these through assimilation experiments.

  • A MSc in meteorology, environmental sciences, computer science (or similar)
  • Experience in satellite data analysis, radiative transfer or data assimilation
  • Strong programming skills, ideally in Python, Fortran and UNIX shell scripting or equivalent
  • Fluency in English is required and a basic knowledge of Dutch is preferred

We work on detailed physical processes, data assimilation, long term climate projections and practical applications including storm surge forecasts and statistics of extremes. RDWK participates in international projects directed towards a variety of weather and climate related research and development areas. The department has a strong international network.

The department performs its activities in collaboration with partners like ACCORD, EC-Earth, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and universities. We work for the national road and water authority Rijkswaterstaat, the Ministry for Infrastructure and Water Management, the Dutch research funding organisation (NWO), the European Copernicus programme and other European research programmes; and on servicing the operational weather forecast centre, climate scenarios and strategic research.
