Join the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) as a Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) system developer. You will join the international team that develops the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) component of the EU Destination Earth Programme. More specifically you will work on an on-demand, high-resolution Digital Twin for weather extremes, collaborating with researchers from top European meteorological services.

What will you be doing? You will play a crucial role in the ECMWF component of the Destination Earth Programme. For this you will participate in the development of a flexible NWP model infrastructure, designed to be run on-demand for extreme and high impact weather across Europe.

Your tasks will include developing workflows and essential components to make the system event- or user-driven and implement these workflows on the latest High-Performance Computing (HPC) platforms. You will work closely with partners from the ACCORD consortium, who develop advanced limited area NWP models like AROME, HARMONIE-AROME, and ALARO. Your work will have a significant impact on weather prediction and climate research for decision support and risk reduction.

In this role, you will:

  • Continue the development of the modelling system created in the first phase of the Destination Earth programme.
  • Implement NWP suites with on-demand and configurable capabilities, advancing towards automatic triggering for extreme weather events on the latest European High-Performance Computing (HPC) platforms.
  • Adapt the system outputs to effectively feed downstream applications and impact models.
  • Test and evaluate the newly developed NWP system at various resolutions and domains.
  • Maintain the code repository using Git.

You will be part of the enthusiastic team in KNMI’s Research and Development of Weather and Climate Models (RDWK) department and will actively contribute to the larger Destination Earth (DestinE) consortium.

This gives you energyYou are excited by the opportunity to work as part of an international team on the cutting edge of R&D in numerical weather prediction, on the most advanced computing platforms available in Europe. At the same time, you are motivated by the societal contribution you can make by facilitating better decision making through the coupling of improved severe weather prediction at high-resolution to impact models, benefiting sectors such as energy, transportation, agriculture and disaster management. You take pride in helping build a more resilient society, capable of mitigating the effects of extreme weather.

Would you like to know more?We understand that you might want to learn more about this position. Therefore, feel free to contact Ben Wichers Schreur, deputy department head, via +316 8133 6849. He will be happy to assist you!

Our unique task is the gathering of information about the atmosphere and the subsurface and the translation of that to actionable information on risks for society.

Would you like to learn more about how we strive to make our high-quality knowledge and information in the area of weather, climate, and seismology operationally available? You'll read more about it on our website.

  • A MSc in meteorology, environmental sciences, computer science (or similar), a PhD is desirable but not essential
  • Experience working with NWP modelling systems (preferably HARMONIE-AROME or AROME)
  • Experience with FORTRAN, Linux, and python is required,
  • Experience with software version control (e.g., git), and CI/CD.
  • Fluency in English is required and a basic knowledge of Dutch is preferred

You recognize yourself in the following characteristics:

You have a result-oriented attitude and the skills to timely manage your work and make progress in the project. You can work in a team, communicate well, and adapt your work to the needs of the consortium. Experience with porting NWP models to different HPC’s is desirable.

The department Research and Development of Weather and Climate models (RDWK) investigates and develops research tools for weather and air quality prediction applications and climate research. We work on detailed physical processes, data assimilation, long term climate projections and practical applications including storm surge forecasts and statistics of extremes. RDWK participates in international projects directed towards a variety of weather and climate related research and development areas. The department has a strong international network.

The department performs its activities in collaboration with partners like ACCORD, EC-Earth, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and universities. We work for the national road and water authority Rijkswaterstaat, the Ministry for Infrastructure and Water Management, the Dutch research funding organisation (NWO), the European Copernicus programme and other European research programmes; and on servicing the operational weather forecast centre, climate scenarios and strategic research. The department collaborates with the other KNMI departments.

Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI)

The weather is temperamental, the ground moves and the climate changes. For our safety and prosperity, we need to know what risks and opportunities this brings. And: how we can best prepare ourselves. The Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI) is the national knowledge and data center for weather, climate and seismology. Reliable, independent and focused on what the Netherlands needs. For a safe Netherlands that is prepared for the impact of weather, climate and earthquakes.

We use our core values - Development, Cooperation and Relevance - to achieve our ambition, both within and outside KNMI, nationally and internationally. We develop our knowledge and expertise and work together to create a single KNMI that makes a difference to society!

Talent as the basis, diversity as the strengthThe KNMI is an inclusive organization. An organization that provides space for everyone and uses the strength of its diverse workforce to achieve better results together for the Netherlands. Inclusive means that everyone feels involved and valued; not in spite of their differences, but thanks to them.

Organisationally, KNMI falls under the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (IenW) is committed to a safe, accessible and liveable Netherlands. That is why the Ministry is working on powerful connections by road, rail, water and air.
