The Climate Services team of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) collects, processes and analyses surface climate observations. In this role you will contribute to climate adaption by providing hands-on suppport for our team in IT-related matters. What will you be doing?

The climate date engineer provides hands-on support and guidance to the Climate Services teams in IT related matters and interact with the departments’ DevOps teams so that new climate information products, such as high resolution maps of urban climate find their way to the Climate Services teams.

In this role you maintain and update the climatological datasets and your effort supports in developing new climate information products, such as pan-European observational climate maps, climate monitoring products and high resolution maps for the Netherlands. You are eager to deliver well-founded climate data products to the climate research community and are enthusiastic about facilitating this from an IT perspective. You work closely with DevOps teams and data engineers and have the opportunity to interact and collaborate within a multidisciplinary environment.

Functie-eisen

  • MSc or Bachelor in computer science or a related field
  • A keen interest in climate and climate change
  • Excellent communication skills and fluency in written and spoken English
  • Experience with scientific programming, preferably in a cloud environment
  • You have analytical thinking skills to comprehend complex data structures, recognize patterns, and extract insights that inform data-driven decision-making.
  • You possess a fundamental understanding of Python and demonstrate proficiency in its utilization

You are proficient in database technologies, proactive, and adept at making progress in occasionally challenging or unpredictable circumstances. Next to that you possess strong problem-solving skills, which are essential for identifying issues, troubleshooting problems, and optimizing data pipelines. You recognize that collaboration and teamwork are essential components for project success, particularly as you work with cross-functional teams. Since you are a team player, you contribute positively to team dynamics, aiding in achieving common goals. Additionally, you have effective communication skills for understanding project requirements, explaining technical concepts to non-technical team members, and collaborating on data-related initiatives. An interest in linking science to applications, international development and climate adaptation are considered to be strong assets for this position.
