Research assistant for a Digital Humanities Project - Online Discourses of South Korea’s Urban Environmental Crisis, Fine Dust

Description

In this position, you will participate in a Digital Humanities Project, titled “Online Discourses of South Korea’s Urban Environmental Crisis, Fine Dust.” The project attempts to illuminate how the discourses surrounding fine dust, which is perceived as one of the most serious environmental issues by the public, is (re)produced among the public through linguistic devices and how it is contextualized after the media's excessive coverage has diminished. It is funded by Academy of Korean Studies in South Korea. You will assist Dr. Jin Hee Park, the project leader, in collecting, processing, and analyzing YouTube video comments. The task mainly involves applying topic modeling techniques, so proficiency in Korean is not required. By participating in this research project, you will be able to develop your skills and knowledge in conducting research, collaboration, and digital humanities.

Selection criteria

  • The project is searching for an MA or BA student who is:
  • Comfortable with programming in Python;
  • Interested in or experienced in topic modeling;
  • Good at time management;
  • Currently studying at the Faculty of Humanities.

Terms and Conditions

We offer a 0,2 fte position (7,6 hours per week) starting 1 March to 30 June 2024 (4 months). The salary ranges from € 2.618.- gross per month for a BA3 student to €2.846 gross per month (for an MA student), based on fulltime employment, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
