About the team

Navy vessels are designed to operate in high-threat environments. These threats are becoming faster, more maneuverable, and more complex. Anti-ship missiles go three to five times faster than the speed of sound, with increasingly complex behavior. At the same the possibilities of modern navy vessels to counter threats are also expanding. When several of these threats come up against them simultaneously, it becomes increasingly difficult for human operators to take efficient and effective protection measures. To aid the crew in effectively combatting these threats at the right time in the right manner, and thus ultimately improve their change of survival, Thales is developing the Above Water Warfare – Fire Control System (AWW-FCS) Product.

The AWW-FCS Product is a next-generation fire control system that is able to integrate different weapon, effectors, and sensor systems, including Thales’s own high-end radar systems like the next-generation dual-band radar suite, integrating a new Active Phased-Array Radar (APAR) with a Sea Master 400 radar. The AWW-FCS continuously assesses which methods are best suited to engage the assigned targets. The AWW-FCS subsequently controls the radar and weapon systems with intelligent algorithms to ensure the target is correctly tracked, targeted, and hit.

About your future job

System engineering can be seen as the ‘steering wheel’ in Thales Naval. We determine what engineering and operations need to develop for our customer. System engineers within AWW-FCS do not only focus on the now, but have to define a system architecture that enables future extensions and improvements of the AWW-FCS Product.

As a Software System Engineer you will work in/together with multidisciplinary and self-organizing Agile/Scrum teams. You are a vital link between customers representatives and their requirements, the product roadmap, the product architecture and the development team.

The main tasks are:

  • Analyzing functional problems;
  • Definition of components with allocated functionality in our modular architecture;
  • Definition of interfaces between components;
  • Determining/ specifying algorithms needed to achieve the correct functionality;
  • Depending on the aspect acquiring deep understanding of the requirements of a specific domain (Gun Fire Control, Missile Fire Control, complex scheduling strategies) and subsystems that are integrated;
  • Contributing to Objective/Epic/Story refinements so that:
  • Our software engineers know what the application is supposed to do and what constraints they need to account for in their software design
  • Our test engineers can define appropriate test cases
