Ever increasing capabilities of Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can be helpful in numerous applications. The goal of the internship is to implement command and control of UAVs using 5G communication links. This proof of concept aims to assess how 5G controlled UAVs could be used for remote operations. Real life validation will be performed in Unmanned Valley field lab.
Liquid Bulk Cargo accounts for approximately 30% of the total maritime cargo shipping. Crude oil, petrol, liquified natural gas, fruit juices, vegetable oil are examples of liquid bulk cargo. An important part of the liquid transport is liquid bulk cargo sampling - a process in which quality/status of the liquid is tested and verified and is important for organization of loading and unloading, timely preparation of industrial assets/processes, identification of possible contamination/quality degradation. Liquid sampling is performed on various locations either on land or off-shore e.g., in a tanker ship. At present, the sampling is performed manually by liquid bulk surveyors. A possible way to simplify the sampling process would be to involve Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) i.e., drones. Drones could fly to the point where sampling needs to be performed, collect the samples and return them to the laboratory. This approach results in reduced costs and improve efficiency. In such case existence of a reliable communication system is essential to support droning operations. The goal of this project is to make use of 5G system to facilitate flight command and control as well as data (e.g. video content) transfer.
