You will be a part of the design and implementation of control strategies for the Charging & Powertrain System. But also the physical modeling of the relevant components. Next to a passion for (control) engineering and the automotive industry it's mandatory to bring at least 2 years of fulltime work experience in areas related to Charging & Powertrain to the table. Also experience with control system development, modeling and implementation is required.

Who is Lightyear?

Lightyear is an innovative and progressive scale-up with one mission; offering clean and affordable mobility to everyone, everywhere! Lightyear originated from the multiple world champion of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge® Cruiser Class; Solar Team Eindhoven. With Stella and Stella Lux they developed a solar powered, 4 person, road legal car. Lightyear was officially established in 2016 and laid the groundwork to make this groundbreaking technology accessible to everyone. In 2016 they started with 5 visionaries, at the beginning of 2018 Lightyear has grown to 40 enthusiasts. Meanwhile, in mid-2019, Lightyear consists of nearly 150 employees. Lightyear has its own production facility and a new office is under construction (delivery July 2019). This growth will continue in the coming years. For that reason we are looking for talent and experience to strengthen ourselves and to contribute in achieving our mission!

In the role of Control Engineer you will be part of our Charging & Powertrain team. We have different roles available in which you can develop yourself and Lightyear. For example Motor Control and Battery Charging. We are interested in your knowledge and ability so we can mould your role and put you in your strength.

What will you do as Control Engineer?

The primary focus of this role is the development of control algorithms within the Charging & Powertrain system. We want you to use best-practices, your experience and talent to create models within your field of expertise. Being part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will make important design choices and you will work in an Agile way. Responsibilities:

  • Develop, update and maintain models and automated simulations that accurately represent real-world systems
  • Design, model, implement and verify control algorithms for complex systems (e.g. charging/balancing algorithms, power converter control or motor control)
  • Consider and make recommendations on the embedded platform used for implementing your control algorithms
  • Apply ISO-26262 safety standards in the creation, testing and review of your code/models
  • Design other important components of the Motor Control, BMS or other systems involving such as diagnostics, fault detection and more
  • Use Matlab/Simulink models for simulation, code generation and validation of models/control algorithms using hardware-in-the-loop tests
  • Plan and coordinate validation tests as required
  • Improve/modify existing control algorithms for performance improvements or firmware/hardware updates

What do we expect from a Control Engineer at Lightyear?

To succeed in the dynamic world of Lightyear, pro activity, craftsmanship, professionalism, communication and adaptability are crucial. In addition, we are looking for people with an ambitious attitude who learn from the past (tried and tested) but who are especially open to transforming new developments or ideas into the "tried and tested" of the future! You are also someone with a high sense of responsibility and a cooperative attitude within multidisciplinary teams. You like short lines of communication and you want to be on your strong qualities. You also have:

  • A Master degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering or Systems and Control
  • At least 2 years of fulltime work experience in control engineering (S and Z domain)
  • You are knowledgeable in control theory, sampling theory, optimization and embedded engineering
  • Knowledge and relevant fulltime working experience is a big plus when you wish to work on battery charging algorithms or motor control
  • Knowledge on ISO26262 is preferred
  • Experience with model-based design; creating control systems & models with Matlab/Simulink
  • Ability and desire to share and cascade subject matter expertise and knowledge effectively with your colleagues and relevant partners
  • Excellent problem-solving skills; reliant on core engineering principals and common sense
  • You like to work in multi-disciplinary teams and manage the different stakeholders
  • You are able to understand requirements and constraints on hardware performance
  • You are able to manage and plan projects independently
  • You have strong communication skills in English (required). Knowledge of the Dutch language is a big plus
