We are looking for a Scientific Editor to join the editorial team launching a prestigious new Cell Press journal spanning data science research.

Data Science is a wide-ranging and varied field. It includes the development of new analysis tools and algorithms, collection, management and curation methods, as well as the application of these to many and varied scientific problems from domains that run the whole gamut of research, from astronomy to zoology. This broadness in scope allows it to be cross-cutting and multidisciplinary, allowing researchers in disparate domains to share best practice and tools to solve problems of importance to society. Data Science investigates the profound transformations in how research can be done and raises issues that affect science and public policy, and the standards and infrastructure that are integral to research.

The journal will be dedicated to the advancement of data science and its application in practice, policies and management. It will be a peer-reviewed, open access journal that is relevant to the whole range of research endeavor, including the computational, natural, social sciences and the humanities. The scope of the journal will include topics such as: novel computational and analysis algorithms, machine learning, descriptions of data infrastructures, applications, software, the availability and usability of complex datasets, and the legal, social and regulatory aspects of data.

The journal will publish a variety of article types, including research papers, practice papers, data articles, essays etc. - thereby adding a new dimension to the communication and exchange of data research results and educational materials.

The ethos of the journal is to be ground-breaking and innovative, not just in the papers that it publishes, but also in its methodology for publishing. This journal will stretch the boundaries of the publishing process in order to get the latest and most impactful research (in whatever form it takes, e.g. datasets, workflows, software, etc.) to the wider community in an effective and cost-efficient way. To this end, the journal will promote Open Access, Open Data and Open Science, to ensure that data, algorithms, infrastructures and tools are used in the most effective and efficient way to facilitate knowledge and learning.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and editorial colleagues to develop, launch and shape the journal. Responsibilities will include assessing submitted research papers, making editorial recommendations, and overseeing the peer review process; commissioning and shaping review- and commentary-type content; writing preview articles, traveling to scientific conferences and academic institutes; developing strong ties with relevant research communities; and contributing to Cell Press growth and innovation projects.

This is a full-time editorial position. Our preference is for a candidate based at the Cell Press headquarters in Cambridge, MA, USA. However, we are also open to candidates who would be located in our Oxford, London, Amsterdam, Beijing, or Shanghai offices.

What we are looking for:

Some of the key attributes that we are looking for in the ideal candidate are

(1) A PhD in a relevant scientific discipline.

(2) Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills

(3) Proven strong and global research networks and connections

(4) Broad scientific interest in science and publishing

(5) Critical thinking and the willingness to learn and absorb new areas of research

(6) The ability to work successfully both independently and in a diverse global team

How to apply:

Please submit:

  • A resume and a cover letter explaining your interest in the position.
  • A selection of 5 recently published articles from other journals that you feel would have been suitable to be published in a new journal, giving a brief rationale for your choice.
  • A brief discussion (<500 words) on what you consider to be the most pressing research questions in the field of data science research.

Applications will be considered in strict confidence, and will be considered on a rolling basis.
