Do you want to help build a scientific data sharing app for scientists?

We are building an intelligent shareable data repository for scientific data and need more help. If you’re a passionate, focused and quality obsessed leader who isn’t afraid of making decisions quickly, testing functionality you’ve not tested before, untangling product requirements and setting strategies for quality that support the wider Elsevier principles we want to hear from you. In return we offer the opportunity to work on a meaningful product application running in an AWS microservices environment on web and web mobile platforms.

More about the role:

We are looking for a Lead Quality Test Engineer to initially join the Mendeley Data team but with a view to growing a small team of Quality Engineers who will be embedded in cross-functional teams building similar or related products. You will be responsible for building, leading and mentoring the Quality Engineers and putting in place the associated strategies and processes ensuring they feed in to the wider Elsevier principles. We expect you to think on your feet and be able to come up with practical, simple solutions to complex problems. You will have a deep knowledge in areas related to Quality Engineering; you should also be knowledgeable in all things related to creating a quality user centered product. In addition, you will have a passion for leading and coaching more junior Quality Engineers.

As a Lead Quality Engineer at Elsevier, you will have an opportunity to shape the future of science, work with the latest technologies, work in an innovative and collaborative environment with the opportunity to participate in Hack Days and brown paper bag sessions. You will:

  • Initially work in Mendeley Data, a mixed discipline scrum team of individuals centred around a common goal — to make sharing versioned research data easy, enjoyable and empowering.
  • Own the quality of a user-centered website which adheres to standards and is progressively enhanced to offer a rich experience for users and ensuring that, as a team, all aspects of quality are continually challenged, reviewed and improved
  • Test a rich JavaScript, HTML & CSS web app with RESTful APIs
  • Help define and monitor technical and business functional metrics
  • Work face to face occasionally with university stakeholders on site
  • Work with the development team and key stakeholders to ensure everything is in place to deliver a quality product to users
  • Put a strategy in place for performance engineering to identify gaps and ensure the team can get an early indication of issues around performance
  • Put a strategy in place for test automation to ensure growth of the automation suite around the user exposed functionality and the API layer
  • Take on line management responsibilities for an existing Quality Engineer
  • Grow a small team (of 4-5 Quality Engineers) and take on line management responsibilities
  • Have a dotted line to the Directory of Quality Engineering for Research Technology

You should bring:

  • Demonstrable experience as a Lead Quality Test Engineer – both hands on and from a leadership perspective
  • Experience testing Web Front End written in HTML 5, CSS, JavaScript and Node.
  • Experience testing both web and desktop sites.
  • Experience using testing tools such as Cucumber, Selenium, Appium (or similar).
  • Experience in a Continuous Integration environment
  • Strong knowledge of and innovative approach to process improvement
  • Knowledge of the Scrum Agile software development process
  • Strong research skills (tools/root cause analysis).
  • Strong leadership and people management skills
