Do you have an interest in strategic procurement processes in an international setting and a natural curiosity for IT? Do you have an interest in a company active in Nutrition, Health and Sustainable Living while contributing to a brighter world with science-based solutions? Are you looking for a position where you can be an added value to a business that uses purpose and sustainability as important business drivers for its performance? Please continue reading.

Group Legal Affairs (GLA) is a global service department within DSM with some 55-legal counsels worldwide. Besides providing legal advice to DSM’s operational business groups, GLA also supports service units and corporate departments, such as Human Resources, Tax, Finance, Innovation, Risk Management, IT and Sourcing. GLA is headquartered in The Netherlands, while its legal counsels often are located with their internal customers.

To strengthen our legal team GLA is looking for an enthusiastic, experienced, self-propelling Legal Counsel to support the Sourcing department. DSM Sourcing takes care of the indirect spend (all spend except raw materials) with a so-called centrally led organization to support a smooth global manufacturing and supply process. For this position it is essential to have the drive to really understand the business (what kind of products are made by DSM, what kind of equipment and services are required to enable DSM to develop and manufacture its products, what are the risks, who are the competitors, etc.) You combine your legal skills with a proven interest in internet technology, artificial intelligence and contracting with IT solution providers, as you will also have regular contact with DSM’s IT department.

You have good communication skills and a strong personality. You might have to say ‘no’ to the business, but as a supporter of the business you also have to think of other responsive and still compliant, commercial ways and possibilities to make it work. This is a position for 4-5 days a week and you will be located in Sittard, The Netherlands.

Key-responsibilities

Contract law, trade control, anti-bribery and corruption, corporate housekeeping matters, data privacy and automation, at times litigation, as well as competition law will be part of your daily practice. Your main tasks will be:

  • To support the DSM Sourcing strategy and operations by giving pro-active, professional, competent, (cost) effective, consistent and solution oriented legal support and advice;
  • To draft, negotiate and advise on contracts and contract related documents, in order to (i) correctly formulate and incorporate the chosen (commercial) position of DSM and protect the company against potential exposures, (ii) achieve a thorough understanding by commercial and other staff involved in a contract of the specific opportunities, risks, dangers, regulations and obligations relating to such contract and (iii) have such contract comply with applicable laws and regulations and relevant requirements and policies of DSM;
  • To act as a value adding business partner;
  • To enhance compliance with applicable laws and regulations and to pro-actively create and maintain awareness of employees of (compliance with) applicable laws and regulations, among others by regularly providing trainings;
  • To act as custodian of all legal aspects within the DSM organization (in Europe);
  • To ensure consistent implementation of relevant corporate requirements and high-quality legal advice;
  • Keep up to date with actual developments in relevant legislation, regulations and jurisprudence.
  • As a provider of general legal services, you will also participate in rolling out DSM-wide corporate governance programs.

Background & Experience

  • Master’s degree in law (Dutch or European);
  • 5-6 years of relevant experience as in-house counsel and/or at a law firm in an international environment, including experience in IT law and data privacy; ideally a qualification/certification in IT law and as Data Privacy Officer;
  • A strong personality, at ease communicating in an international setting, solid backbone and a decisive, pro-active attitude;
  • Clear legal mindset and able to translate legal language into actionable advice; ‘good is good enough’;
  • Strong proficiency in the English language;
  • Interest in the materials and life science industry;
  • Ability to set priorities and to reduce complicated matters to the essence;
  • A healthy degree of political sensitivity and a mindset for teamwork.
