Within our team, we are looking for a (Associate) Director Corporate Strategy and Acquisitions. The Director will be part of the eight-person CS&A team (half of them focused on strategy and planning, the other half focused on M&A execution) and report directly to the Executive Vice-President CS&A, who reports to the CEO of the Group and is a member of the Executive Committee for the Group. The Director will work very closely together with the VPs M&A, the VP Strategy Materials and the VP Strategy Nutrition. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide execution support to the M&A team on M&A projects, including acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures;
  • Secondarily, initiate and support corporate strategy and Business Group strategy projects, related to the Business Groups in DSM’s Nutrition Cluster and the Business Groups in DSM’s Materials Cluster, and ensure their execution; and
  • Support recommendations to DSM’s Executive Committee on M&A, business development projects, capital investments and performance improvement projects.

Promotion opportunities would include succeeding the VP M&A or Strategy Materials or Strategy Nutrition, or a line responsibility role in one of the Business Groups.

Center of activities would be the Group HQ in Heerlen, The Netherlands, with regular travel in relation to M&A opportunities and to the main Business Group locations (on an as-needed basis depending on on-going projects).

The Ideal Candidate

The candidate ideally has an M&A background, with some strategy experience a plus.  He or she should be able to structure problems, provide analytical rigor and structure effective communication at all levels of the organization and has experience initiating, discussing and negotiating M&A transactions with a counter party. The individual should be a self-starter and collaborative leader, who is internationally and commercially savvy. Additionally, this person should have an affinity with macro-economic issues, is curious and creative in tackling complex issues and is able to deal with ambiguity and manage stakeholders at all levels of the organization effectively. The candidate should be a team player who is able to prioritize tasks and independently plan his/her workload.

  • Master level in Economics, Finance, Business or Technology;
  • Minimum 5 years relevant working M&A experience (investment bank, private equity), ideally with some strategy consulting experience;
  • Strong problem-solving skills (structuring, analytics, communications), project management and due diligence skills;
  • Strong financial knowledge (being able to work with P&L Accounts, Balance Sheets, Cash Flow Statements and valuation models);
  • Superior analytical skills and affinity for negotiating and working with external parties;
  • Understanding of B2B strategies and some affinity with B2C strategies;
  • Commercial savviness given active involvement in business development opportunities and M&A situations;
  • Affinity with the Nutrition/ Consumer Goods or Materials sector is a plus;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Service oriented;
  • Fluent in English and ideally one additional language.
