WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

Uncertainty is an inevitable component of engineering models, although until not so long ago it was neglected or at least received much less attention than deterministic physical models. With the advances in probability theory and mathematical statistics combined with the increase in computational power, it is now possible to conduct probabilistic analysis of realistic engineering problems. Moreover, the availability of cheap sensors, and the inflow and accumulation of data create a vast resource of information which can be tapped.

Given the immense value of civil engineering structures, more informed decisions of policy makers -supported by coupled physical-probabilistic models - can potentially save billions of euros.

However, these coupled physical-probabilistic models can be very compute-intensive, and the long computational time often prohibits the completion of the analysis. Therefore, the aim of this internship/graduation project is to explore the utilization of GPU computation to reduce the computational time and in turn to unlock the potential of coupled physical-probabilistic models for asset management.

The internship/thesis will be jointly supervised by researchers from the Department of Structural Reliability (TNO) and the Faculty of Science Informatics Institute (University of Amsterdam). The duration of this internship is 7 to 9 months.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT OF YOUR WORK SITUATION?

You will be working in the Structural Reliabilitydepartment with a group of enthusiastic researchers/consultants that are open for discussion and are willing to help out. As an intern you have the possibility to work together with the experts of TNO and get a taste of how it is like to work in an applied research institute.

TNO is an independent research organization whose expertise and research make an important contribution to the competitiveness of companies and organizations, to the economy and to the quality of society as a whole. Innovation with purpose is what TNO stands for. With 3000 people we develop knowledge not for its own sake but for practical application. To create new products that make life more pleasant and valuable and help companies innovate. To find creative answers to the questions posed by society. We work for a variety of customers: governments, the SME sector, large companies, service providers and non-governmental organizations. Working together on new knowledge, better products and clear recommendations for policy and processes. In everything we do, impact is the key. Our product and process innovations and recommendations are only worth something if our customers can use them to boost their competitiveness.

WHAT CAN TNO OFFER YOU?

You want to work on the precursor of your career, an internship provides you with the opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO also goes a step further. It’s not just looking that interests us, you and your knowledge are essential to our innovation. That’s why we attach a great deal of value to your personal and professional development. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your internship, and be given the scope for you to exceed yourself and your expectations. We also provide suitable compensation for internships.

Innovation with purpose: that is what TNO stands for. We develop knowledge not for its own sake, but for practical application. TNO connects people and knowledge to create innovations that boost the competitive strength of industry and the well-being of society in a sustainable way.
