The WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition is Mars Petcare’s fundamental science centre that drives quality and innovation for our global brands in pet nutrition, pet health and pet care. We follow a scientific and data-driven approach based on experimental data generated at WALTHAM, and on big data from genetic testing, activity monitors and electronic health records.
Mining these connected data sets with advance analytical methods allows us to generate new insights giving Mars Petcare a competitive advantage and helping us to make abetter world for pets.
As part of the data analytics team the data scientist will independently define and execute data science projects across the Petcare ecosystem. You will be the expert on advanced data science methodology for the entire team, and also be a key driver in defining the portfolio of data science projects in a setting that currently is growing and needing further direction.
The Data Scientist position is embedded in the data analytics team of WALTHAM’s research organisation. The main task is to execute and deliver on data science projects. You will get to bring to bear your relevant expertise in data mining and data management, but also showcase the skills to define projects together with stakeholders across Mars Petcare through communicating on progress and results.
As a Data Scientist here, you will be a strong advocate for data-driven research, to be independent, to work at high level of quality, and to contribute to shaping the development of our data platform and the portfolio of data science projects.
Example projects include finding phenotypic associations in high throughput sequencing data and mining electronic health records for biomarkers of disease. To do this effectively will require learning of the WALTHAM and Mars Petcare R&D plan and vision, and regular interaction with our stakeholders.
Whether giving a formal presentation or just grabbing a coffee, this role will need someone who is comfortable in either situation and has great verbal & written communication skills. At Mars we are strong advocates of personal development and in this role there will be parts self-led but also through attending appropriate courses/symposia/conferences to maintain awareness of current knowledge.
