Energy service and energy service efficiency are important concepts when attempting to understand the future demand for energy in the world. The recently published Shell Sky Scenario illustrates this well; rising incomes in developing regions drive global energy demand. This is moderated by significant efficiency improvements, leading to the increase in world energy consumption as indicated in the graph.

Understanding future trends in energy service efficiencies is crucial for understanding the total energy demand that will be required in the future. To achieve this goal, this research aims to provide a dataset of historical energy service efficiencies and a view of how they will look in the future to achieve this goal. The latter will be accomplished by the development of a mathematical model.

To capture all intricate aspects of energy service efficiency is an enormous task, both from a data collection perspective and the sheer scope of the problem. Therefore, we will focus on a single sector on a global scale. For this particular sector we will:

  • Collect historical data and review this against existing data. This data can potentially be noisy.
  • Create energy service efficiencies for future years. This will be done based on a model which should be developed during the project.
  • The model should include a geographical component, i.e. it should be able to be applied to a range of different countries.

Additionally, can this model be generic enough to extend this towards other sectors as well? Is there an overarching logic that can be applied to more, if not all, sectors?

How to tackle these challenges? First of all, how do we measure energy service efficiency? How do we determine its future values? How do we compare between different energy sectors? These are some of the questions that will require a solution during the project. You will be tasked with building a model that implements those and to validate that model. Moreover, you will be given the opportunity to communicate your findings to Shell subject matter experts.

The thesis project is conducted in collaboration with the Scenarios Team of Shell, located in The Hague. Their subject matter experts will be involved during the process.
