Are you a square peg in a round hole? Well at Zurich, we see this as a positive. Our roles are all about recruiting and retaining the best talent; we’re not your usual suspects when it comes to this as we don’t like to “pigeon hole” people. Instead, we look to attract individuals into the business who can demonstrate the right behaviours, whatever their background. Clearly the roles are technical but it’s just as important to have those behaviours when you join our diverse and supportive team in Risk Engineering. We want you to retain your individuality and bring all those traits with you, whether you’re naturally nosey, or a natural disruptor, in order to better help our customers.

You’ll want to lead the charge when it comes to creative solutions and will be full of ideas around how we can look at new ways to do this. Your ability to develop and strengthen relationships will be a natural trait and you’ll view this role as a great opportunity to seek out new ways of challenging what’s best for our customers and how we get there. At Zurich, we’re proud of Square pegs!

The opportunity:

Risk selection, pricing and improvement are fundamental to the success of Zurich. To do this effectively requires specialist expertise and understanding of the industries our customers operate in and the hazards to which they are exposed. Zurich’s in-house Risk Engineering team provide that expertise, which is something that sets us apart in the eyes of our customers.

We have some opportunities in our Risk Engineering team in the UK. The roles will be primarily focused on our Commercial Property and Zurich Municipal Property business assisting our underwriters and customers in understanding and improving risk. Ideally the opportunities would be based around the North West, Midlands, South East and West of England, however we are open to adapting these needs to consider applications from all areas.

All of our Risk Engineers are home based and the role will require elements of travel and flexibility. The role is customer facing and act as a technical resource to our customers and our business partners in Underwriting and Claims. We are looking for people with experience in understanding the risks that businesses face relating to fire, non-fire perils and the impact of business interruption and how these risks can be mitigated through risk improvement programmes. An insurance background is not essential, those from industry and commercial undertakings will be considered.

This role is available full-time, as a job-share, or part-time. This is because we want the best people for our roles, and we recognise that sometimes those people aren’t available full-time

Key Responsibilities:

The role of a Risk Engineer is varied, challenging but very rewarding, therefore accountabilities can be diverse in nature but will include:

  • Assessing Risk Quality and Loss Exposures for Property Damage and Business Interruption in order to assist Underwriters in Risk Selection. This will generally be prior to inception or at renewal, following losses or acquisitions.
  • Carrying out Risk Engineering Surveys of a range of commercial and industrial properties with varying trade occupations, furnishing underwriters with Risk Engineering Reports and the customer with Risk Improvement Recommendations.
  • Managing accounts for both large multi-national and local organisations, devising and implementing survey programmes. Undertaking portfolio analysis using Zurich analytic tools to cover areas such as overall quality of account, industry benchmarking, loss exposure and risk improvement management.
  • Prepare wrap-up reports and management information for Customer Stewardship meetings
  • Undertake desk top reviews of survey reports from Brokers’ and other Insurers to validate their findings for Zurich’s underwriting purposes.
  • Proactively manage the progress and completion of Risk improvement actions
  • To support claims validation and investigation processes
  • To provide thought leadership and technical insight to customers, business partners and colleagues.

Your skills and experience:

The ideal candidates should be able to demonstrate some or all of the following requirements:

  • Be customer centric with an ability to build meaningful and trusting relationships.
  • Demonstrate strong consultative skills and approach
  • Be naturally curious and able to provide innovative solutions
  • Clearly demonstrate strong communication skills and be able to negotiate and facilitate as required
  • An ability to embrace empowerment and accountability.
  • A positive and proactive approach to using digital tools, having a capability to think innovatively in relation to how these can be utilised from a risk engineering perspective.
  • Produce detailed, accurate Technical reporting/ Survey reports
  • Ability to promptly research a technical issue, using technical references/contacts
  • Membership of an appropriate and relevant body ie. Institution of Fire Engineers, Institute of Risk management or Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, Institution of Mechanical Engineers or Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors
  • NEBOSH Cert or Diploma, Engineering Degree or IRM Cert or Diploma.

The Reward:

We’re offering a competitive salary, as well as this we offer an excellent lifestyle benefits package which includes –

  • 25 days holiday plus an additional 3 volunteering days
  • 12% pension
  • Annual company bonuses
  • Full private medical cover/ contribution to medical cover
