At BuroHappold, we’re passionate about great engineering. And always have been.

We are a holistic engineering practice, where engineers are more than just human calculators, they’re helpers in shaping solutions, making the world a better place to live in.

When it comes to your graduate career, don’t opt for the obvious. Don’t accept the average. Expect the best and work with the best.

We make the vision viable.

What is Infrastructure Engineering?

People require convenient access to buildings, open spaces and transport facilities. Public spaces and streets should be safe, legible and welcoming. Incoming utility services such as water, electricity, gas, heating and telecommunications should be efficient, reliable and deliverable in a phased and cost effective manner. Sustainable water resource management measures, for example recycling of waste water for irrigation, and sustainable drainage systems should be integrated with the external landscape.

At BuroHappold we offer an integrated multi-disciplinary service throughout the whole project life cycle, from planning through to design and implementation. We take pride in working closely with clients, collaborators and stakeholders to deliver cost effective and sustainable outcomes. Recognising that infrastructure is often the “glue” that binds developments together, we aim to take a proactive approach to problem solving and co-ordination.

Our expertise ranges from city scale masterplanning through to campus and building scale development infrastructure.

What sort of projects would I work on?

King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia - The infrastructure masterplan that we produced for covered a site area of over 200sqkm.

The International Quarter, Battersea Power Station Redevelopment, Wembley Regeneration, Elephant Park (at Elephant and Castle), UK – we have provided multiple complex campus scale development infrastructure projects within London.

The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, UK – we are proud to have worked on numerous legacy developments for the Olympic Park.

What would I do?

"I’m in the infrastructure department and have mainly been working on masterplans at quite a high level, not detailed design, which I love. My roles have been mainly to do with designing network routes for various utilities as well as costing different bits of infrastructure and advising clients on what options are feasible or likely to be within budget. On my current project I’ve been more involved in the management and coordination of a small team as well as pulling together the costing and phasing plan of a massive new city in the Far East whilst still getting to grips with the nitty gritty of highways design".

Graduate Infrastructure Engineer

What degree could I be studying?

  • Civil Engineering degree.

What would a typical day look like?

No two days are the same, but as an overview…

What further qualifications could I work towards?

We are keen to support your activity towards Chartered Engineering status. We will support employees to achieve the highest level of membership and registration their academic background allows.

What is life really like?

“In my time at BuroHappold I’ve had the opportunity to work on some amazing projects including one masterplanning project in Asia. The scale of the project was massive and my role involved both technical and managerial aspects which was great experience, especially this early on in my career. I was partly involved in the highways design but mainly my time was spent compiling a site-wide infrastructure costing and phasing plan and coordinating a small team. I’d never been involved in a project of that scale before and the level of responsibility was a bit daunting at first but I soon settled into the rhythm of the project and it was great having that level of contact with the client”.
