BuroHappold’s Waste Team is made up of engineers and scientists with varied backgrounds and experiences, but all with a common passion for solving the complex management of waste in the urban realm.  We are unique in the waste sector and the exposure the team has to state of the art thinking in terms of urban planning encourages us to think radically about how materials are used and managed in cities. The team have worked on the design of over 230 projects in 35 different countries, each with varying degrees of waste management requirements and or limitations. Examples of recent projects include New York High Line, Reykjavik Landspittali Hospital, Tottenham Hotspur football stadium, Malaysia city  masterplan and Tate Modern 2.

The successful candidate is expected to take a role in supporting and evolving our waste service offers. This unique opportunity will present you with the challenge of working on many prestigious worldwide projects and developments from either our Edinburgh or London office. With opportunities to travel, the work is both novel and unique and we consider ourselves to be leaders in this field of waste consultancy.  We are seeking to appoint a waste industry professional, specifically someone with waste logistics understanding, city systems design, infrastructure analysis and enthusiasm to think differently about how waste is managed. 

The candidate should be qualified to degree level in an applicable subject with relevant post education experience. In addition, candidates who can demonstrate the following are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Passion and enthusiasm for better managing waste in the urban context;
  • An interest for working with architects and design teams of the built environment;
  • Data analysis skills, including auditing, analysis and presenting waste data, e.g. waste estimations and forecasting;
  • Ability to communicate in an effective and confident manner;
  • Excellent demonstrable evidence in report writing;
  • Business acumen and ability to network be capable of maintaining relationships both within and outside the company; and
  • Ability to manage tasks and projects successfully.  

  Required Skills

  • Good knowledge of waste collection and treatment systems;
  • Highly proficient in MS Office;
  • Excellent report writing;
  • Good time management;
  • Ability to work on your own or part of a wider team who may be based elsewhere;
  • Innovative, inquisitive and desire to think laterally to solve complex problems;
  • Ability to interpreting engineering and architectural drawings and visualisations;
  • Confident presenter; and
  • Good client management skills and ability to win work.

Desirable skills:

Proficient with CAD, Bluebeam and Illustrator.  

Qualifications & Experience:

The candidate will be qualified to science or engineering degree level in a waste, environmental, planning, sustainable development or related discipline.
