Job Purpose and Summary

Canon Europe is a subsidiary of Canon Inc. a world-leading innovator and provider of imaging solutions and we are the leading provider of consumer, business-to-business, and industrial digital imaging solutions. An emphasis on technology is part of Canon’s corporate DNA and we are dedicated to helping people re-imagine what is possible through imaging.

We are utilising our imaging technologies to go beyond the rich line up of our existing products to cultivating new areas of business where our imaging technology can push the boundaries of what is possible. This reaches into satellite development, medical advancements, growing the possibilities of print and industrial equipment and network video cameras, which contribute towards building smart cities. Canon’s core strength in optical and imaging technology is also contributing to advances in astronomy. Integral to all of this and the successful growth on the organisation is our IP team who, through the provision of high-quality, timely, flexible and cost-efficient patent services including; filing, prosecution, opposition, freedom to operate searching and advisory services, actively promotes and supports Canon and the globalisation of its business. The IP team places great value on obtaining patents overseas, carefully adhering to a patent-filing strategy that pursues patents in essential countries and regions while taking into consideration the business strategies and technology and product trends unique to each location.

This is what one new starter in the IP team had to say;

“Being part of Canon's patent team allows me to work on a wide range of cutting-edge technologies in a company where IP is valued as an essential part of the business. I particularly enjoy working as part of a highly experienced team where strategic thinking is encouraged and I feel I am almost always able to expend the time I believe the task warrants, rather than being restricted by time or budget”

What we give

With Canon, you'll get the support and encouragement you need to grow, from people who share your ambition. We'll invest in your professional development to help you learn and progress in your role with us. You'll find leaders who give you the freedom to explore new things and a team where knowledge is shared openly.

As the Patent Attorney your key responsibilities will be;

  • Filing and prosecution of CINC European and UK patent applications, including attending oral proceedings at the European Patent Office

This may involve some travel, predominantly within Europe. This work will be wide ranging in scope and can include everything from invention harvesting, through drafting and prosecution, to freedom to operate and enforcement activity.
  • Taking pro-active and conclusive steps to strengthen the IP practice of newly acquired companies so that they operate within Canon global guidelines (e.g. training and/or general IP consultancy/management).
  • Supporting a culture of continuous technological innovation to enable a relevant group company to build valuable patent portfolios.
  • Engaging and collaborating with internal CPD activities (internal education seminars).

What we ask

We need people who can achieve the exceptional by working collaboratively, who have the courage to risk new ways of doing things and the ability to see the world the way their customers see it. We're looking for creative problem-solvers like you, someone who can ensure Canon stays ahead in an ever-changing world.

As the Patent Attorney, you will have the following skills and qualifications;

  • An academic and practical background in physics, engineering, software, manufacturing, medical or mechanical matters is preferable, with any experience touching on high-tech inventions being helpful (though not essential). You will be comfortable working in a modern, fast-paced environment where you are given a level of autonomy to do your work
  • Relevant working experience in a private practice patent firm or the patent department of an international company
  • Ability to analyse and adapt processes to improve efficiency and minimise risk

  • Communicate Effectively
  • Respond Flexibly and collaboratively
