Function overview

The Dispute Resolution Paralegal Support Department is comprised of approximately 35 paralegals and a team of 5 technical co-ordinators. The Paralegal Operations Manager oversees the day to day running of the department and there are three Paralegal Managers who each manage a paralegal team of approximately 12 paralegals. The department provides paralegal support and assistance in relation to the wide variety of cases undertaken by the department.

Role Purpose

The Dispute Resolution paralegals support the department’s partners, associates and trainees on a wide range of cases. They may be assigned to work on specific cases with specific legal teams or required to assist with a number of ad hoc tasks on a variety of matters. The tasks delegated vary widely exposing each paralegal to a range of experiences and allowing them to build a rapport with a cross-section of the firm’s employees.

Key responsibilities and deliverables

  • Document management is central to the role and includes document imaging/scanning and redacting, database entry/coding, database searching, document review and database maintenance/updating.
  • Bundle preparation (eg witness bundles and trial bundles) includes document searches to identify which documents are to be included in a bundle, bulk printing, arranging photocopying, copy-checking, indexing, file preparation and collation. If documents are stored electronically it may also include database tagging and/or searching.
  • Preparation for court hearings, trial, arbitration, mediations etc includes transporting and setting up files/documents as instructed and arranging for storage of documents and extra equipment as may be required.
  • Hardcopy document management including file indexing, creation of spines & covers.
  • Proofreading of documents including contracts, agreements and transcripts.
  • Research (manual and/or electronic).
  • Assisting with the preparation of draft bills to be sent to clients.
  • Boxing and indexing files to be sent to deeds for off-site storage.
  • Service, delivery or collection of documents as may be required.
  • Translation tasks – for paralegals fluent in a language other than English.
  • Off-site work. Clients occasionally request paralegal assistance at their premises. The tasks undertaken off-site are the same as the work completed by paralegals at the firm. Such mini-secondments vary in length from a day to several months and may be within London or elsewhere in the UK. There is also an occasional need to assist one of the firm’s European offices. In all of these circumstances, all logistics, including travel and accommodation are arranged.

Key Requirements

Preferred Professional Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree preferably in law, preferably 2:1 or above (if undergraduate degree in an area other than law must have completed conversion course).
  • Must have completed the LPC or BVC, or be overseas qualified or equivalent.
  • Previous paralegal experience within litigation is preferred.

Required Technical Qualifications:

  • Competence with Office 2010 including Word and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of legal search engines such as Westlaw, Butterworths Lexis-Nexis, OJ online and Justis.
  • Basic knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Competent keyboard skills.
  • Ability to obtain competence with database programs.
