The Concurrent Engineering team at CrossGuard is responsible for ensuring that the highly complex parts demanded for the impact protection capability of our products, are capable of being produced cost-effectively and with high quality. In order to achieve this, we have developed our own custom mould design methodologies that fully utilise advanced 3D Printing techniques and urethane casting to produce advanced mould systems. In line with this we are looking for a talented and motivated design engineer who not only enjoys conceptualization of production and assembly processes but also loves to go into detailed design, prototyping and testing to deliver durable and high-quality mould systems, jigs and fixtures for the factory floor.

Could this be you?

Job Overview

In this role you will report to the Head of Production Development.

As Production Design Engineer you will be responsible for all concurrent engineering activities during the Product Development process, like assessing product designs for manufacturability and ease of assembly, developing mould designs for parts produced in-house, as well as planning production and assembly processes. You will be working closely with product designers as well as external suppliers/clients to ensure that the product designs developed are possible to be produced efficiently, safely and cost-effectively in line with product quality targets and cost targets.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Undertake production design and other concurrent engineering activities on the development of a range of body armour and impact protection products for CrossGuard as well as external clients, to ensure that the products can be produced to the required cost, performance and quality targets with adequate production methods and processes.
  • Assist with tooling design data and documentation (CAD/BOM) throughout product lifecycle through Design Release Process and Revision/Configuration Management.
  • Assist with development of technical roadmaps for improved manufacturing and faster to- market lead times for new products.
  • Assist product designers (both CrossGuard and external clients) with DFM/A (Design for Manufacturing/Assembly) guidelines to improve manufacturability/ ease-of-assembly.
  • Work with Manufacturing Operations team to ensure continuous improvement of mould designs and manufacturing processes.

Daily and Monthly Duties

  • Carry out tooling design, prototyping and testing activities for low-cost novel mould systems.
  • Assist with concept development and definition of tooling system architecture.
  • Undertake detail design and delivery of final mould components and assemblies for production.
  • Manage engineering change for components based on input from relevant departments.
  • Document production design and processes via PLM, PDM systems.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Production/Mechanical/Industrial Design Engineering.
  • Basic solid/surface 3D CAD modelling skills (preferably in Solidworks/Onshape) is a must.
  • Affinity to prototyping and getting hands dirty in order to iterate quickly and improve designs.
  • A thorough methodical approach to design activities and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and analytical problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

We are a young, dynamic Delft start-up, focused on providing protection without compromise through innovative body armour and impact protection products. Be it a martial artist fighting with heavy impact weapons or a hockey star on the field, a soldier serving in the military or an operator working heavy machinery on the factory floor, we are pioneering the protection technology to help these users effortlessly and safely carry out their tasks, and in style.

Currently we are working on bringing our first product, the ProGauntlet, a protective hand exoskeleton, to market. In the process, we are pushing the boundaries of not only impact protection technology in body armour, but also in smart-agile manufacturing in order to deliver high-quality customized products to users that ‘fit like a glove’!
