System Architect / Electrical Engineer

Full-time

The possibilities of hyperloop transportation can only be fully exploited using an intelligent control system that can guarantee safe, reliable and efficient operations. Key tasks to be performed automatically by this system are: vehicle motion planning and control, operations supervision and management, vehicle protection. In other words, the operations control system schedules the trips, sends instructions to the actuators regulating vehicle motion (e.g., linear motor), monitors operations in real time (through multiple sensors), and resolves potential conflicts in the event of disturbances, while ensuring that passengers are safe at all times. The hyperloop operations control system consists of both software and hardware; it is envisaged as a network of distributed controllers (where most of the system’s intelligence lies) plus a series of communication and sensor networks interfacing with the hyperloop vehicles, tractive system and infrastructure.

As our system architect / electrical engineer, you will have a pivotal role in the team. First, you will contribute to define the requirements for the hyperloop operations control system and will design its general architecture (including both hardware and software but focusing particularly on the hardware side), subject to safety, operational and technological constraints. In other words, you will define how the operations control system needs to look like at the high level (components, features, network structure, spatial configuration, etc.) in order to ensure that it can perform its functions effectively and as efficiently as possible. To this end, you will need to cooperate with the colleagues who are developing the operations control software, as well as with other teams within our company which are developing the hyperloop vehicle, tractive system and infrastructure.

Afterwards, you will focus on engineering the hardware side of the operations control system (including communication, computer and sensor networks) for our hyperloop high-speed test facility. We, together with our partners, plan to build this test facility within the next two years; you will be involved in its design from the start. You will aim your attention at the macro-level engineering while working jointly with external supplier companies, which are expected to do the detailed design of the hardware components and to produce them.

Responsibilities

As our system architect / electrical engineer your responsibilities will initially be the following:

  • Identifying the requirements for the hyperloop operations control system (based on the characteristics of hyperloop technology and safety/operational principles)
  • Producing an overview of potentially suitable architecture concepts, evaluating them based on suitable criteria and identifying the most suitable concept(s)
  • Designing the general architecture of the hyperloop operations control system (which includes specifying its components, and defining their functions, interrelations, network structure, spatial configuration and interfaces with other sub-systems)

Afterwards, your responsibilities will be:

  • Carrying out the macro-level engineering of the hardware side of the operations control system (communication, computer and sensor networks, etc.) for our hyperloop high-speed test facility
  • Defining the specifications for the test facility operations control system’s hardware components and supervise the work of the external supplier companies that will produce them to ensure that we get exactly what we need

What we like to see

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience, demonstrated ability in your field of expertise, and willingness to make a difference
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the field of Electrical or Computer Engineering
  • Excellent communication skills in English — both written and verbal
  • Deep understanding of transportation operations management
  • Experience in designing operations control systems for transportation or manufacturing systems (e.g., railway networks, people movers, airport baggage-handling systems, industrial warehouses, conveyor systems, pipe systems) or part of such systems (such as their communication, computer or sensor networks)
  • Experience in computer programming (for example, in Matlab, C, Python, etc…)
  • Passion for engineering and technology development
  • Professionalism, strong work ethic and internal motivation to succeed
  • Strong organizational and teamwork skills
  • Attention to detail combined with ability to see the big picture
  • Eagerness to develop yourself and reflect upon your performance
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomous, and demanding atmosphere
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity, be assertive and manage multiple priorities
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office
  • Availability to work extended hours and weekends when needed
  • Availability to travel within and outside Europe

The company

Hardt is a European technology company that specializes in hyperloop. We believe it is our duty to improve the lives of current and future generations by creating technologies that challenge time and distance and remove physical boundaries. We envision a world where you can go and be with everyone and everything you care about. A world where distance does not matter.

Hyperloop is the new mode of transportation for large volumes of passengers and cargo. The hyperloop network connects cities, countries, and even continents in short periods of time. Tubes with a low-pressure environment offer ideal conditions for low-energy travel and protect the vehicles from external influences. Just like a highway, vehicles join and exit the high-speed network at any point along the route and are seamlessly connected with other modalities. Direct trips are made possible without transfers or intermediate stops.

How do you see the future of travel? We offer you to be among the first to have a say. Here, if one of us has an idea and a way to prove it, you will have the grounds to do it. We continually challenge each other to think unrestrained. You will have the chance to make a real impact on society. Above all, you will also have the best fun with us at our beautiful office and test facility locations in Delft. Those who are part of the team claim they got more than they bargained for. Do you have what it takes to join?

Hardt is what bonds us, a team of determined people from all over the world.

We are working on solutions for heavily overpopulated cities; inaccessible rural areas; and unhealthy industrial urbanization, all of which inhibits human potential. By developing the hyperloop, we are creating an on-demand, affordable transport system with which people can travel huge distances in a short time – all completely emission-free, safe, and accessible to everyone. People will be able to live and work wherever they choose and, consequently, expand their boundaries.

Connecting the world is an intricate mission, and, to do this, we proudly collaborate with governments, leading industries, and institutes from all over the world.
