The primary function of the IT Infrastructure & Network Engineer role is to ensure that all BRE’s Data Centre and Network infrastructure is maintained, operated and managed to meet (or exceed) agreed service levels. This infrastructure includes all servers (physical & virtual), central data storage, network devices, security appliances, telephony and conferencing & presentation services (voice and video).

The IT Infrastructure & Network Engineer is responsible for the delivery of back-office, network and security services that under-pin all IT Services that BRE provide to internal Customers (BRE staff and associates) and external Customers (of BRE SaaS and web services products) and has responsibility to ensure telephony and presentation technology is available when needed.

The role requires excellent Customer focus and Customer Service skills, as well as a good working knowledge of ITIL Service Management processes and technical server, network and telephony management skills to ensure BRE’s server, storage, network, security, telephony & presentation devices are configured to comply with internal and external standards such as ISO 27001.

  • Ensure all work, and the work of consultants and contractors under their supervision, is conducted to BRE Health & Safety rules and standards.
  • Put the Customer at the centre of all IT do and build and maintain relationships with business representatives to ensure appropriate and agreed services are delivered.
  • Provide IT Support to agreed SLA’s, including remote support at each BRE office or where-ever BRE staff are located, improving 2nd line support and facilitating support from external 3rd line service providers when needed.
  • Work with external partners to maintain LAN & WAN network connectivity (both wired & wireless), install/configure routers, switches and security devices (such as firewalls, web application firewalls, mail gateways, log management and mobile device management solutions).
  • Actively participate in team & project meetings and communication with the team and with other stakeholders to discuss IT Service Delivery, identify improvements and to promote IT Services and capabilities.
  • Support high-quality, reliable, available and secure IT Infrastructure & Network Services that meet BRE changing business needs, including but not limited to; monitoring the environment, the operation and maintenance of BRE configurations, and assisting with the installation of new devices and documentation when required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives leading to the modernisation of BRE’s IT Infrastructure & Network environment, including the tools and technologies used to configure, monitor, support, operate, manage and secure the environment.
  • Support the diagnostic, isolation, fault resolution, remediation and recovery of; network, data centre infrastructure and security related service incidents.
  • Contribute to the development of physical & virtual server and network hardware & software configuration standards, monitor and report on capacity & utilisation.
  • Help ensure Information Security best practice is followed always.
  • Help ensure all work is compliant with internal and external audit requirements.
  • Promote IT skills, expertise and solutions across the company and provide advice and service to the business. Develop and maintain knowledge of relevant business areas.
  • Contribute to the support of IT and AV equipment in BREs conference and meeting rooms, to develop Conference Suite Services into a viable commercial product.
  • Contribute to the implementation ITIL best practice processes to improve 2nd line call resolution, manage customer expectations and improve perceptions, and build strong internal relationships.
  • Ensure the ‘status’ and actions on ITSM ‘cases’ are kept up to date.
  • Out of hours maintenance work will be required when the need arises to limit the impact on critical business services.
  • Provide technical evaluation, configuration, implementation and support for specific tasks and projects as agreed with the IT Director.

Must have: (essential skills)

  1. ITILv3 Foundation and have at least 3 years’ experience delivering & supporting IT Infrastructure, to improve the data centre and/or network computing environment, preferably within medium sized companies.
  2. Experience of configuring & managing IT Infrastructure compliant with security best practice aligned to a recognised cyber-security standard such as; ISO 27001, PCI-DSS, Gov.UK PSN CoCo or Cyber-Essentials.
  3. ‘Hands-on’ experience of delivering high-quality IT Services to monitor, manage & secure IT infrastructure across Microsoft Windows Server (2008, 2012 & 2016) and vmWare (v5.5+) corporate environments
  4. Experience of administrating Active Directory services, including DNS, DHCP and Group Policy.
  5. Experience of taking ownership of User’s issues, ensuring incident and problems are investigated, diagnosed and resolved or services are recovered within a reasonable timeframe, escalating where necessary.
  6. Customer focused – placing the customer at the centre of all that we do.
  7. Ability to work independently and with multi-disciplinary teams (e.g. business areas, broad spectrum of IT teams, Customers, 3rd parties).
  8. Able to build productive, co-operative working relationships with Customers, peers and key stakeholders based on respect and good rapport.
  9. Contribute to effective communication to facilitate sharing of best practice and organisational learning

Great to also have: (desirable skills & experience)

  1. Hands-on experience of managing Linux (preferably Ubuntu v1604+) web servers within corporate environments.
  2. Experience of using and writing PowerShell script.
  3. Experience of monitoring infrastructure and network health, performance, utilisation and capacity to help identify and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  4. Experience of firewall, switch and other network device configurations, administration and internal and external network security.
  5. Experience of Business Continuity, including Disaster Recovery testing.
  6. Experience of supporting and maintaining telephony systems (Fixed & Mobile), including user’s IP handsets and VoIP.
  7. Working knowledge of video conferencing, audio / visual technology equipment and collaboration tool, such as Skype for Business.
  8. Experience of configuring Microsoft SQL and MySQL database management systems.
  9. Maintenance of IT Infrastructure & Network company standards and documentation, including operating manuals, design documents and asset lists within IT Service Management tools
