As a member of the SEC Team you will need to demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills and the ability to actively identify and pursue innovative and sustainable solutions to problems.
  • Commitment to building relationships with clients & colleagues, networking via industry events and seminars, and actively engaging in profile raising through e.g. internal/ external presentations or speaking at events.
  • The ability to add value to a client relationship and develop client accounts
  • Strong commercial skills including the ability to understand a client’s key risks and drivers, and the commercial context in which Clients and Arcadis operate.
  • Commitment to actively nurtures talent in others by helping people build their networks, and coach and mentor others and share knowledge

Key Qualifications / Experience Requirements:

  • The candidate would be expected to have a suitable Engineering degree from a recognised university, ideally Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Qualifications should be recognised by a professional engineering body and the candidate should aspire to full membership of this.
  • We are looking for candidates who can take on challenges and work to support other experts within our team when the need arises.
  • The role will also require helping to prepare proposals and marketing material in relation to our Fire Safety capabilities

Additional skills and expertise in the following topics would be an advantage:

  • Hazard Identification;
  • As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) understanding;
  • Fire Risk Assessment principles;
  • Understanding of fire dynamics, heat transfer and smoke behaviour principles in enclosed environments (particularly in undergrounds and tunnels);
  • Basic understanding on Active Fire Protection (AFP) and Passive Fire Protection (PFP) systems;
  • Basic knowledge on fire modelling simulation (using zone models such as CFAST and CFD-based models such as FDS or SMARTFIRE).

Your Day-to-Day:

  • Development of Fire Safety Strategy reports;
  • Means of Escape analysis (including calculations of evacuation times based on RSET principles from PD 7974 part 6; escape routes and exits widths; assessment of travel distances; development and assessment of evacuation strategy plans);
  • People Movement Modelling Analysis (PeMMA): evacuation and crowd simulations using computational models, such as EXODUS, SIMULEX etc;
  • Good knowledge on CAD (Computer Aided Design) packages for building up floor plans, sections, elevations of building designs;
  • Familiarity with BIM (Building Information Modelling);
  • Assessment and understanding of the main British fire safety legislation and standards applied to buildings, such as Approved Document B (AD B), BS9999, BS7974;
  • Assessment and understanding of the main British fire safety legislation and standards, such as the London Underground fire safety standards, the Network Rail standards, e.g., LUL – S1371, Railway Safety Principles and Guidance (RSPG);
  • Risk Based Interpretation and Application of these fire safety documents as well as other Codes of Practice such as international documents such as NFPA standards (e.g., NFPA 101, NFPA 130);
  • Third Party Review/Design Verification;
  • Attendance of internal design team meetings;
  • Attendance of external design team meetings with clients with initial supervision;
  • Supporting on the development of Fire Risk Assessment reports for both, the building and rail sectors.

Graduate Programme:

We have a two-year development programme for our Graduates, during which time you will be fully supported in working towards various accreditation routes. You will also receive an ILM endorsed award upon completion of the training modules.
