Training contracts

A thorough induction kicks off your training contract, introducing you to all the resources you'll need to support your work and training.

In collaboration with you, we plan four seats of six months, and review that plan at regular intervals. Each seat starts with a handover and training, complete with technical expertise, so you know exactly what to expect. At least one seat will be in either our banking or our securities and derivatives practice, and most trainees choose to do at least one other transactional seat. We will also encourage you to undertake a secondment to one of our growing offices or to a valued client.

You’ll be supervised by a partner or associate who’ll work closely with you and provide guidance, reviewing your progress as you go along and helping you to pinpoint your successes and develop in areas that need work.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

We are now accepting applications to start in September 2021/March 2022. Applications are open between 1 October 2018 – 6 January 2019.

We recruit on a rolling basis therefore early applications are advised to avoid disappointment.

You can apply for a training contract with us if you are a penultimate year law student or beyond, or a finalist or graduate studying a non-law degree. Apply now.

Law school

All our future trainees attend The University of Law, Europe’s largest and the UK’s longest-established specialist provider of legal education and training. If you’ve not completed a law degree, you’ll study for the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) before moving on to the Legal Practice Course (LPC+).

The GDL can be taken at any branch of The University of Law; however, most of our future trainees choose to join a cohort of fellow Ashurst trainees at the Moorgate branch.

Our LPC+ course is unique to Ashurst and is also run at Moorgate. During the course, you will attend an Ashurst induction designed to help you get to grips with the firm and, just as importantly, get to know your fellow trainees.

The course is tailored to the practice areas key to our firm and so as you might expect, the modules are chosen for you. We've also designed an "Ashurst as a business" module, where you'll learn from leaders within our firm about our strategy and the role you will play in delivering its success.

Scholarships and living allowance

For the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and Legal Practice Course (LPC), we offer scholarships that cover your course fees and provide £8,000 per year towards the cost of maintenance (£7,000 if you choose to study the GDL outside London).

Interest-free loans

We also offer a £2,000 interest-free loan, repayable in instalments once you start your training contract.

Degree prizes and language bursary

If you achieve a first-class honours degree having accepted our offer of a training contract, we will award you a prize of £500. A £500 bursary towards language tuition is also available.

Secondments

Whether it’s to a client or one of our international offices, secondments are, in our eyes, a pivotal aspect of your development. We’ll encourage you to take one if you can. Trainees and associates who’ve experienced one come back with a better appreciation of different cultures and approaches, greater understanding of the client and the way they work, finely tuned relationship skills and feedback on their experience that in the past has included the words “invaluable”, “mind-blowing” and “uplifting”!

After qualification

Even partners with 30 years’ experience still have their "aha!" moments. While the training contract will have given you a solid foundation of skills and a knack for disentangling complexities, your experience continues to evolve. Every case, client and colleague will give you the chance to set off on a new learning curve – so keep an open mind.

Our global skills development programme, along with regular updates to your legal expertise, will hone your knowledge and ability, and we’ll continue to give you a broad range of work after qualification to help you avoid over-specialising too soon.

At key stages in your career, you can take advantage of our formal development programmes. These offer you coaching and tailored training that will boost your business development and leadership skills.

A leading international law firm with world class capability.
With our technical expertise, local knowledge and international network, we deliver an experience for our clients that other professional service providers find hard to match. And we are committed to being a sustainable global law firm, having positive impacts for our clients, employees, profession, the environment and the communities in which we are based.
