Structural Optimization, design the future Ampelmann Structures!

Ampelmann designs and delivers innovative, safe, reliable and efficient access solutions to the offshore energy industries worldwide. The company maintains a fleet of 55 operational systems used for transferring personnel and cargo from vessels to fixed or floating offshore structures.

An important company goal is to decrease the weight of the systems to increase energy efficiency and capabilities. Structural optimization can be used to reach these goals in an efficient way. The actual implementation of structural optimization tools is challenging and an interesting topic, which leads to the goal of the thesis: Develop a method to optimize structural designs of Ampelmann.

Relevant subjects/questions:

  • What are the possibilities?
  • What methods are used in the industry/science?
  • What is the most effecient optimization algorithm for structural optimization?
  • Can we combine beam and plate elements?
  • (How) can we implement plate model optimation?
  • Local stress peaks
  • Linear vs. non-linear stress analysis
  • Buckling analysis
  • Modeling of several load types

Preferred education profile:

  • MSc thesis
  • Aerospace, Mechanical engineering or similar
  • Direction: preferably structures

Desirable hard skills:

  • Programming: Matlab , C++ , python or other
  • Structural analysis
  • Numerical methods
