WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

In our ever changing world, the urban environment becomes more and more important. This means that both military and security operations will be in the urban environment. Knowing what is behind a wall becomes of paramount interest. For this reason, through the wall radar systems are being developed which focus on obtaining building lay-outs, and/or on the detection of people inside a building.

A novel approach to detecting people inside a building is forward scattering. Within TNO several radar systems have been developed for through-the-wall sensing. These systems will be used to perform several experiments to record both forward scattering and monostatic backscatter (traditional radar) data. These recordings will be used off-line to fine tune and optimise a tracker (data fusion engine to track people over time) or design a new tracker that can combine these different types of observations. The goal is to track people inside a building using RF technology.

Your activities will consist of using an existing experimental radar system to record relevant data, simulate the scenarios and integrate the data processing with the tracker.

The duration of this internship is at least 3 months.

WHAT DO WE REQUIRE OF YOU?

  • You are in the final stages of your degree in artificial intelligence, physics, mathematics, electrical engineering or a similar degree and have some track record in the field of signal processing and sensors;
  • You have experience in programming in Matlab and/or Python;
  • You are pragmatic and focused on making things work;
  • Next to technical expertise we value communication skills and a results-driven attitude.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT OF YOUR WORK SITUATION?

You will perform this assignment in the Department of Radar Technology. We are a passionate and creative group of professionals (60 people) dedicated to the specification, development and evaluation of innovative, high-performance MMICs, miniaturised and integrated RF subsystems, antennas and front-ends. The department is at the heart of novel, game-changing radar system and signal processing concepts for the military, space and civil domains.

WHAT CAN TNO OFFER YOU?

You want to work on the precursor of your career; a work placement gives you an opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO goes a step further. It’s not just looking that interests us; you and your knowledge are essential to our innovation. That’s why we attach a great deal of value to your personal and professional development. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself. Naturally, we provide suitable work placement compensation.
