Within the Loyalty, Analytics & Media Services department of Albert Heijn the Customer Insights & Solutions (CIS) team works on analyzing large amounts of data to improve our understanding of consumer behavior and to build personalized digital services. This is realized by obtaining insights into marketing campaign effects, building of customer segmentation models, estimating customer lifetime value, providing personal recommendations, etc. Solutions are realized by building algorithms with the help of effective data science/machine learning techniques (e.g. Probabilistic Graphical Models, Deep Belief Networks, Gradient Boosting, Random Forests, etc.) and state-of-the-art infrastructure (Microsoft Azure). Therefore, CIS can deliver, test, implement relevant models in multi-disciplinary teams to ensure AH stays on the frontline of the most favorable & healthiest supermarket of the Netherlands.

To guarantee that models can provide business value the data needs to be reliable, timely and of high quality. This applies to internal data as well as external data. Our goal is to improve our data landscape through standardization and automation such that data is readily available. Moreover, significant steps are taken to further improve the usefulness of existing data (such as the Bonuskaart data) through innovation and optimization. The goal is to further improve the data analysis process such that we can explain consumer behavior more effectively and provide personalized services to create the best and unique customer shopping experience. The CIS team plays a center role to achieve this goal.

Graduation Assignment

AH continuously tries to improve the customer journeys of our customers through offering of personalized services. One such service is to make shopping at AH easy by reducing the time to fill online shopping baskets, flexibility in choosing relevant products, suggesting alternative products, etc. One way to do that is to use a recommendation system to provide relevant suggestions to customers.

In this assignment the student works on investigating the use of deep learning techniques to provide relevant product recommendations to our customers given their historic purchasing behavior. We expect the student to address the following:

  • Literature study of deep learning technique within retail domain;
  • Investigate various models and their applicability to recommendations given customer transaction data;
  • Implement, test and evaluate solutions to recommendations (using open source tools, such as, TensorFlow, Keras, etc.);
  • Build a proof of concept recommender system using deep learning techniques;
  • Document code, report (e.g. through graduation thesis) and present findings to internal stakeholders

Affinity

  • Affinity with retail domain;
  • Interest in applying deep learning techniques to build a recommender system based on real world customer transaction data (Big Data) of the largest supermarket of the Netherlands;
  • Excellent programming skills in Python and (T-)SQL, and
  • The student is required to be enrolled in a MSc program Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics or related during the entire duration of the graduation project.

What we offer

  • Internship compensation between €450 – € 500 per period (4 weeks) and compensation in travel costs depending on travel distance;
  • Internship duration is 5/6 months with the start date in February or September (other duration or starting dates are also possible);
  • Possibility to join events organized by the Young Ahold Delhaize and the internship office.
  • Daily supervision of the student is done by dr. Patrick de Oude, Senior Data Scientist & Lead Data Science of AH's Customer Insights & Solutions team.
