Join the Material Science & Metallurgy Graduate Scheme and be an integral part of our vision to be the efficient, responsible electricity company and a champion of low-carbon growth. This 16-month programme will allow you to gain experience in both Nuclear New Build and Generation business areas as well as the opportunity to achieve chartered engineering status as our programme is accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (“IoM3”).

Nature, Scope and Principal Accountabilities

There is no better time to join the scheme as progress is made on Hinkley Point C, the largest construction project in Europe, and plans to develop a second project at Sizewell C have commenced. We want to share this exciting journey with you as you start your life-long career with EDF Energy shaping the energy industry of the future.

Following a week-long induction with graduates from all of our schemes at our state of the art facility at Cannington Court (Somerset) in September 2019, you will spend the first 3 months of the scheme working on Hinkley Point C (“HPC”) related projects in the South West. We want to develop you and ensure you have the right skills to do the role required of you so this time will be interspersed with periods of residential training at our training centre near Gloucester. The next 8 months of your programme will be spent rotating around some of our sites across the UK allowing you to see how our different departments in the Central Technical Organisation and Power Stations collaborate. During the rotations you could find yourself spending time with the Central Technical Organisation, Station Engineering, Operations, Maintenance and Technical & Safety functions. You won’t be on your own though, you will have the support of your line manager, a recent graduate buddy and a qualified Materials and Metallurgy Scientist or Engineer technical mentor throughout the scheme. Our Young Professionals (“YP”) Network will also welcome you to their network where they provide an effective platform to learn, lead and connect.  It is a good opportunity for you to knowledge share with fellow graduates and trainees from our other Early Careers schemes.  The YP Network aims to foster future leaders of EDF Energy.

During your attachment at CTO you will work with experienced Engineers on a variety of technical projects. You will quickly gain an understanding of the technical aspects of the work and with the help of your mentor/supervisor you will soon be making a real contribution and gaining knowledge and experience of how we make modifications to our nuclear power plants. At the end of the attachment you will have developed technical, nuclear safety and project management skills and experience that will support you throughout your career.

During your power station based attachments you will work with experienced site based engineers; this attachment will allow you to get ‘hands-on’ plant experience. You will work closely with skilled staff to carryout maintenance, testing and repair of power plant equipment. This attachment will give you a good understanding of the scale and complexity of equipment on a nuclear power station site.

A placement within Materials Group will find you based in the lab and will give you an appreciation of general materials, hands-on work and degradation mechanisms.

The final 5 months of the programme will be spent working on HPC projects, gaining more experience and developing your skills as you prepare to interview for a permanent role to transition into at the end of the scheme in January 2021. Completing our Materials graduate programme will give you the skills and knowledge to be successful in a variety of roles where you could potentially find yourself working within Design Authority, welding or manufacturing.

We are passionate about your development during the graduate scheme and you will have a tailored training path that will help develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours both during the scheme and in your future career. We place a particular focus on your technical development, with a range of learning interventions ranging from nuclear fundamentals, system appreciations through to nuclear safety. You will also undertake key behavioural development programmes considering areas such as presentation skills and business communications.  You’ll be given time to invest in your development with the expectation that you will commit to both the training and implementing your learning post course back into the business. You will have the chance to learn from others and build networks that will help you moving forward in your careers.

As part of your wider leadership training, you’ll be trained as a STEM Ambassador which will allow you to inspire our future generation of engineers at STEM events nationwide. To get the most from our training during the programme you’ll need to be flexible about your location and prepared to move from one location to another, as assignments rotate you could find yourself at any of our sites across the UK.

Within one year of completion of the programme you will be applying the skills and knowledge you have gained as you build your career in materials science. This could include pursuing a secondment to our parent organisation EDF SA in France as a Materials & Metallurgy Engineer or Quality Control Engineer. After 2 years you should be ready to move into a more technically advanced role and possibly take on some supervisory responsibilities. Five years from completing the programme you could be a technical specialist or manager and be able to apply your experience in numerous areas of EDF Group at home or abroad, not to mention gaining your IoM3 chartership.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 2:1 Bachelor’s Degree or a 2:2 Postgraduate Degree (or expected) in Materials Science & Metallurgy or an associated subject
  • A genuine interest in nuclear energy
  • Desire to learn and develop your skills during and after the scheme
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Flexibility to relocate
