It is of great importance to understand the degree of the roughness of a surface and its scattering effect in many advanced scientific and industrial instruments and systems. Such applications span from remote sensing from space to nanoscale inspection of high precision optical surfaces. The impact for system design can be found in important industries such as EUV lithography, sustainable energy production systems, and others.

What will be your role?

In all real system, surfaces are all ‘rough’ to a certain degree, some naturally, some by design, and some unavoidable. Since Rayleigh’s investigation of the scattering of a monochromatic light at a sinusoidal surface roughly a century ago, the study of the scattering of electromagnetic waves from rough surface has been an active research field. There are various classical models to describe surfaces of different degree of roughness. As the computation methods evolve and with the progress in numerical simulations, novel techniques have been applied to the rough surface study as well.In this project, we will take a broader view in this field of research. After an introduction from TNO experts, you will start with compiling a broad overview of literature on the topic of rough surfaces scattering. The purpose is to identify methods/models that are suitable for a few high impact applications. A preliminary test using the selected model will be carried out with a clear design target for a high requirement application.

What we expect from you

  • Master level study in physics
  • Affinity with scientific literature
  • Knowledge in optics preferably
  • Experience in computation tool and language such as, Matlab / Python
