Job description

This PhD project is part of the European ERJU (Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking) project IAM4RAIL. The goal of the overall project is to develop novel methods for asset management of railway infrastructure.

The aim of this PhD project is to develop novel prediction and decision making methods for maintenance of railway tracks. A first step involves the development of improved methods for prediction of track condition based on multi-sensing (i.e., integration and fusion of heterogeneous data from various sources). We will in particular focus on track geometry and condition prediction using a combination of model-based and data-driven approaches. A next step involves the identification of the needs for maintenance of the railway infrastructure based on the predictions, measurements, and data analysis. The third part of the PhD project involves the development of optimization-based and/or AI-based methods for planning and scheduling of maintenance operations taking into account operational costs, risks, and the need to minimize disruption to railway traffic.

This PhD project is done in close cooperation with the Section of Railway Engineering of Delft University of Technology.

Requirements

We are looking for a candidate with an MSc degree in systems and control, applied mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field, and with a strong background or interest in systems & control, machine learning, and railway infrastructure. The candidate is expected to work on the boundary of several research domains.

A good command of the English language is required. More specifically, doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis.
