Contribute to tomorrow’s information security. Envision it. Join us for your research internship at the department Applied Cryptography & Quantum Algorithms at TNO The Hague or Groningen. Most quantum algorithms require many more qubits than today’s hardware offers. When using quantum networks, we can link various quantum devices and thereby solve larger problems than single quantum computers can. Furthermore, these linked quantum computers open the way to completely new applications, such as secure cooperation between various parties. Both are examples of distributed quantum computing.

WHAT WILL BE YOUR ROLE?

Within this internship you will work on distributed quantum computing and develop new distributed quantum algorithms and validate them by means of simulations. We are specifically interested in distributed quantum computing algorithms that allow multiple parties to collaborate securely. In the analysis we will also consider the effect of noise and losses on the quality of the output of the algorithm. This is important, as noise plays a prominent role in near-term quantum devices.

You do this in the (digital) company of your inspiring colleagues and fellow interns at the Applied Cryptography & Quantum Algorithms department. As an intern you are really part of the team, and you can hop into anyone’s office for a chat about your project, to make use of their expertise, but also for personal feedback or just a cup of coffee. That way you can learn all about the interesting work we do.

HOW DO YOU WANT TO CONTRIBUTE TO TOMORROW'S WORLD? HOW BIG CAN YOUR IMPACT BE? COME AND WORK AT TNO AND ENVISION IT.

WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU

For this internship we are looking for a motivated student in mathematics, physics or computer science who thrives in a multi-disciplinary environment and the fast-moving field of quantum. The expected duration of the internship is nine months, and we aim for at least one scientific paper to be published in a relevant conference or journal.

In addition, you have:

  • Academic level: you are in the final phase of your master's.
  • A background in, or affinity with, quantum computing is an advantage – you have the motivation and ability to master the topic within the first few months of your internship.
  • Programming experience with Python is an advantage.
  • Academic proficiency of English.

WHAT YOU’LL GET IN RETURN

You want to work on the precursor of your career; a work placement gives you an opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO goes a step further. It’s not just looking that interests us; you and your knowledge are essential to our innovation. That’s why we attach a great deal of value to your personal and professional development. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself. Naturally, we provide suitable work placement compensation.
