Job Description:
WO: Mechanical Engineering/Physics
Paper drying modelling and validation with measurements
Are you a WO mechanical engineering or physics student who is looking for a graduation assignment? Do you want to help us understand drying of paper better, in order to make better predictions that will help in the design process of our machines? Then this assignment might be suited for you!
Your assignment
During ink jet printing, like in the Canon varioPRINT iX-series (figure below), a lot of liquid is jetted on the paper. Most of it needs to be evaporated afterwards. This drying is done with a combination of high temperature and enhanced convection.
Drying of hygroscopic material, e.g. paper, typically consists of three regimes. Free water evaporation at the surface, free water evaporation from the pores inside the paper structure and finally bound water evaporation from the paper fibres (see figures below). The first regime has a constant evaporation rate under constant boundary conditions. The latter two regimes, however are somewhat more complex.
The transition from first regime to second regime is theoretically dependent on the typical pore size within the paper structure and also on the fluid properties, e.g. viscosity, surface tension and density. Determining at which moisture content this second drying regime starts is a though challenge, since we are looking at a micro structure, which can be difficult to characterize. Also, we know that the third regime should theoretically start at the maximum hygroscopic moisture content, which is given by so-called isothermal sorption curves that are material and temperature dependent. However, is this really true and can this be validated with measurements? Can we model these latter two regimes, such that it is applicable and can be validated?
This assignment will have an even distribution between theoretical- and practical work.
Your profile
You are a mechanical engineering/physics student who likes a combination of both theoretical (numerical) and practical work. A basic knowledge about thermodynamics and (microfluidic-) flow can be helpful.
