Modelling an ink level sensor

Are you a student pursuing a Master degree in Electrical Engineering? Are you interested in the multi-physics interaction in an ink chamber to describe a model that will be used to optimize the level sensing method? Then we are looking for you!

Your assignment

Our advanced inkjet technology is reshaping the way people print across the globe. By using inkjet technology, we enable our customers to print on nearly anything you can imagine, which ranges from large banners to glass panels and even doors. One of the key technologies in facilitating this is the print head in our machine. The technology that is used for print heads is a piezoelectric element, which has enabled us to develop several technologies such as PAINt or DigiDot.

As we are producing high volume printing machines, the printheads consume a lot of ink. To prevent a print head from running dry, we have developed a level sensor to ensure an adequate amount of ink in the reservoir. In our company there is a constant need for shorter development cycles and more productive products. To meet this challenge, we are making more use of extensive system modelling. This also applies to the level sensor of the print head, where we would like you to develop the detailed model. Such a model will enable us to better understand phenomena in the print head, and consequently identify critical parameters. Furthermore, your model will help us in improving designs and thus reduce the required amount of prototypes.

Your assignment will be to develop a sensing method based on a model of the electromagnetic interactions between the sensing method, the ink and the mechanical environment. You will most likely develop this model using a Finite Element Modelling technique or related software, such as COMSOL. Using this model, we would like you to investigate the most optimal combination of a mechanical reservoir design and its sensing method. Your work in this area will not only entail theoretical work, but you will also need to validate hands-on that your model matches with reality. This will require mixed signal circuit design, code development and experiment design. During the entire project, you will be able to ask questions to your colleagues with background in mechanics, electronics, physics or even chemistry, if that is necessary to achieve the goals of the project.

Your profile

  • You are currently pursuing a Master degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • You are looking for a challenging graduation project at a high-tech company.
  • You think it’s a challenge to work in a project that requires insights into multiple disciplines
  • You have experience with Finite Element Modelling, for instance with COMSOL.
  • You are eager and able to validate theoretical insights with hands-on experiments.
  • During your studies, you have acquired knowledge in the fields of electromagnetics and fundamentals of electronics. Preferably, you also have some multi-physics modelling experience as well.
  • As of September 2022, you are available fulltime for at least 7.5 months. Other starting dates can be discussed.
