This role focuses on providing legal support to the delivery of Shell’s Powering Progress strategy in the UK and NL. Powering Progress sets out our strategy to accelerate the transition of our business to net-zero emissions. It offers the opportunity to help shaping Shell’s business environment in the UK and NL and provides a unique insight in, and influence on, the operations of Shell at senior levels and across all businesses.

What’s the role?

As the Legal Counsel Sustainability UK and NL, we are looking to you to provide legal advice to UK and NL Corporate Relations, the UK and NL Country Coordination Teams (including the Country Chairs) and the UK and NL energy transition teams on a diverse range of legal matters in the area of Energy Transition and Climate Change.

The role will be a part of a legal team providing legal advice on sustainability related matters to a variety of other legal departments and businesses spread across the world. Whilst the role has a strong local energy transition focus, you are part of a global team and all lawyers are expected to support each other and, at times, cover for each other. This cross-over is also encouraged from a personal development perspective.

More specifically, your role will include:

  • Act as principal lawyer for UK and NL Corporate Relations in relation to policy developments and policy and advocacy dilemmas, ensuring consistency with Shell’s Net Zero Emission (NZE) objectives and targets;
  • Advise on and set strategy for legal risk management related to local public policy decisions and positioning by Shell;
  • Provide legal and strategic advice on climate related legal developments of country significance;
  • Act as UK and NL focal point for the Energy Transition Legal Working Group, which connects lawyers across the wider Legal function on sustainability related legal matters;
  • Advise on and set strategy for legal risk management related to media, social media, and relations with external stakeholders in UK and NL generally;
  • Act as the principal lawyer for the UK and NL energy transition teams.

What we need from you

The successful candidate not only is a solid lawyer but is also genuinely interested in the energy transition in the context of the political and societal dynamics in the UK and NL. Your advice considers delivery of Powering Progress and the acceleration of the energy transition, maintaining Shell’s legal position, and promoting Shell’s reputation.

It requires a diverse skill set, combining traditional legal skills with a risk-based approach and a passion for innovation and change. You thrive in situations where you need to think autonomously. You are expected to handle and prioritize competing requests while maintaining excellent relationships with all stakeholders. Proficiency in English and Dutch is a must.The role likely involves regular travel to the UK.
