Team description:

We are a diverse team of Big Data engineers, product managers and infrastructure engineers building. Our team is responsible for building Expedia Group's data streaming and ingestion platform, reliably handling many billions of messages every day.

Business Contribution/Impact:

Our goal is to build a world-class leading streaming platform that enables data producers and consumers to easily share and process information. We are building upon our platform using open source projects such as Kafka, Kubernetes and Java Spring, all running in the cloud, and we love contributing our work back to the open source community

What you’ll do:

Collaboration:

  • You will extend outside of direct organization and collaborate with peers across a senior level organization.
  • You will lead a community of practice and bring people together for shared learning.
  • You will partner with the business to have a clear understanding of how own technology stack is tied to business outcomes and our bottom line.

Leadership & Mentoring:

  • You will successfully conduct day-to-day work and solve complex issues in own specific technical engineering area.
  • You will share domain and industry knowledge between cross-functional teams.
  • You will serve as a guide to others by sharing and helping junior associates in their duties and demonstrate positive impact and leadership outside immediate team scope.
  • You will fill in for peer engineering management as need arises and advocate efforts to remove tech roadblocks for their team for long term success.

Systems & technological integration:

  • You will have knowledge of features and facilities for integration, and communication among applications, databases and technology platforms to bring together different components and form a fully functional solution to a business problem.
  • You will have proven ability, experience and advanced knowledge of building and operating highly available, distributed systems of data extraction, ingestion, and processing of large data sets.

Software development/ programming:

  • You will creatively test and maintains software applications and related programs and procedures by using a variety of software development tools following design requirements of customer.
  • You will act as a spokesperson for software design best practices and will advise on designing, performance/scalability tuning of batch and real time stream analytics and large data processing systems.
  • You will research and recommend frameworks and architectural/code design patterns [NG] for large scale stream processing in a scalable distributed environment and identify areas of improvements within the code and suggests solutions.
  • You will advocate for operational excellence (such as unit testing, establishing SLAs, programming for resiliency and scalability).
  • You will advise on technical limitations of software design for products and provides alternative solutions.

Systems Thinking:

  • You will facilitate collaboration with different stakeholders with varied perspectives to develop effective solutions to issues.
  • You will strive for optimum organizational efficiency by applying systems thinking across boundaries and making recommendations about policies/ processes.
  • You will take a whole systems approach to analyze issues and implement holistic solutions by ensuring that linkages between structure, people, process and technology are made.

Innovation:

  • You will recognize outmoded methods of operation with current systems and design plans for disrupting them in a non-disruptive manner.
  • You will design and lead advancements, innovations and changes in current solution designs relating to latest advancements in software engineering (specifically related to data engineering, cloud data platforms, data models, enterprise information management, business intelligence and data science).

Technical communication/ presentation:

  • You will report on status of difficult or high-level projects to local tech leadership via written or oral means. Ensures documentation is complete.
  • You will justify technology choices to both technical and non-technical observers.
  • You will share technology learnings and best practices across engineering community in organization.

Who you are:

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Equivalent Experience; Technical degree or relevant experience is applicable.
  • Relevant experience includes:
  • Experience in one of the programming languages such as Java /Kotlin/Scala required
  • Experience using Kafka or equivalent stream technology
  • Experience building and deploying in AWS cloud using CI/CD technologies such as Maven, Jenkins, Kubernetes
  • Experience with one or more Big Data technologies such as Spark Streaming, Flink, Hive, Hadoop etc
  • Experienced in working in at least 2 medium to large scale distributed systems projects.
  • Worked in decentralized teams and projects.
  • Formally mentored at least 3 individual contributors.
  • Built high performance, scalable projects
  • Drove technical design end to end of at least 2 distributed systems
  • Initiated, socialized and executed upon at least 3 non-trivial changes that benefited the larger engineering community.
  • You have a good understanding of organizational strategy, architecture patterns (Microservices, Event Driven) and technology choices and coaching the team in execution in alignment to these guidelines.
  • You have a good understanding of data modeling, schema design patterns and modern data access patterns (including API, stream, data lake). You can coach the team to execution against industry and organizational best practices and standards.
  • You are familiar with various cloud technologies and their offerings within the data specialization.
  • You understand the complexity of building products in a multi-cloud, multi-region, distributed processing context and ability to make decisions within the constraints of what's available and organizational guidance.
  • You are familiar with building data products to support batch and real-time DS, ML and Deep learning applications.
  • You can create team project systems.
  • You have guided integrations across teams within business unit.
  • You can independently design, communicate and execute on architecture for moderately complex data products.
  • You can identify and advocate for project quality via testing, monitoring and alerting at the project level.
  • You have a strong understanding of testing and monitoring tools and technologies.
  • You can establish operational excellence metrics at the team level.
  • You influence and contribute to product vision for the team.
  • You understand data access patterns, streaming technology, data validation, data modeling, data performance, cost optimization.
