Job Description:

The Airbus Zephyr program is at the leading edge of technology in its sector and constantly looking for improvements and new developments to enhance its HAPS (High Altitude Pseudo Satellite) capabilities. Zephyr are now looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer with an engineering background that includes manufacture and test to assist in the design development and delivery of the various Zephyr aircraft programs including; aircraft design, testing, transportation and ground operating stations.

This is an exciting position in a growing team with many interesting program and design challenges today and tomorrow.

The candidate must have both practical and analytical knowledge/experience to design and execute their own test/qualification routes from concept to cleared production article.

Tasks and Accountabilities

Working within multidisciplinary development team the candidate will:

  • Provide detailed design solutions, sometimes from very basic requirements as part of a product development team co-located in Farnborough
  • Take responsibility for the progression of delegated work packages, working alone under your own initiative, or as part of a team
  • Develop and define build processes and methods required for design solutions
  • Oversee and guide the build of development aircraft and any supporting equipment required to achieve the design aims in accordance with applicable regulations
  • Provide technical inputs and advice to the wider product development team on design matters and arising issues
  • Own/support any associated testing to clear designs; new or modifications
  • Own/support and/or run engineering reviews associated with delegated packages
  • Work closely with production and procurement teams to ensure consideration has been given for DFx aspects early in the design lifecycle
  • Provide ‘at elbow’ build line support to production team – resolving emergent issues
  • Capture agreed changes in-line with change control processes to protect the content and currency of the issued design and build record
  • Continuous improvement - Proactively identify improvements that could positively affect either quality, product, product performance or the production cycle
  • Provide a pro-active input to and ensure the continuity of your own ongoing professional development

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Extensive experience in an aviation design development role
  • Pro-active problem solver, Interpretation of requirements into finished product
  • ONC or similar relevant qualification/experience in mechanical, aero or production engineering
  • Proficient user of CAD modelling package(s) - ideally using Solid Works.
  • Proven experience in developing new product solutions for cutting edge applications
  • Demonstrable experience of taking a system technical requirement and providing a complete design solution
  • In depth knowledge of drawing standards specifically BS8888, and tolerancing.
  • Experience of manufacturing composite components, trimming and finishing of composite parts for ultra-lightweight structures
  • Experience of composites laminating
  • Experience of manufacturing and assembling close tolerance parts, tools, aids, fixtures using workshop machines and hand tools
  • Demonstrable experience of supporting and working with production/manufacture

Desirable Experience

  • Experienced in the use of a PLM toolset
  • Aircraft trials preparation, repair and maintenance
  • Knowledge/use of CAM software in connection with operating CNC machinery
  • Assembly and installation of intricate avionics LRU’s and mechanisms
  • Knowledge of detail and assembly tooling

  • Ability to plan/manage delegated work, prioritising tasks, formulating assembly sequences
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team, as the work dictates
  • Reliable in respect of quality and timeliness of deliverable items to achieve program
  • Good attention to detail
  • Good communicator – able to articulate design solutions/changes to end users
  • Safety conscious, safe approach to own work and that of others
  • Quality conscious, working methods are able to demonstrate good change management /configuration control
  • Whilst work is programed, our customer’s schedules are key to our success and the team’s ability flex and adapt with changing demands requires a flexible attitude to working
  • Some travel to support flight trials overseas may be required, although unlikely in the short term – this will be discussed at the interview
