Department/Role overview:

As part of an ongoing effort to review our change methodologies at Ashurst, we are working on introducing a new iterative development process. This process is to be trialled on one of our programmes focused around the Service Management Platform, Cherwell.

We are looking for an experienced Iteration Manager/Scrum Master with experience in service transition (delivery of releases and transition to customer) to support us on this new journey and help us to deliver successfully. The Iteration Manager/Scrum Master will work within a delivery team on a range of sequential functional releases within Cherwell that span Ashurst's in-scope areas for transition and transformation. This is a key role in helping us achieve the goals of both the programme and our wider change objectives.

On the completion of the projects within the programme, or otherwise on an as needed basis, you could be allocated to other Ashurst initiatives.

Main responsibilities:

As the Iteration Manager/Scrum Master, you will be a key member of the Service Management Programme core team, and you will be responsible for leading the iterative development process within the delivery team ensuring that we meet the goals and objectives of the projects. You must be passionate about what you do and an excellent communicator. Your role will be in line with the core principles of Agile and you will be expected to support the team accordingly.

The role will also include the Service Transition aspects including planning service transactions for operational use and coordinating the necessary resources. Overseeing and controlling all changes to a product's lifecycle so that changes are made with minimal impact on IT services.

You must demonstrate the ability to be highly focussed, helping us to implement agile principles across all levels of stakeholders and third parties within a high performance environment and with a relentless focus on working product release. Specific information on responsibilities are below:

Service Transition:

Manage the moving of services into the live business environment as smoothly as possible.

  • Plan and manage service changes efficiently and effectively.

  • Manage risks relating to new, changed or retired services.
  • Successfully deploy service releases into supported environments.
  • Set correct expectations on the performance and use of new or changed services.
  • Ensure that service changes create the expected business value.
  • Provide good-quality knowledge and information about services and service assets.

Iteration/Scrum Management:

  • Provide delivery services for the broader Service Management Programme in cooperation with operational team leads to ensure the satisfactory completion of complex technology enabled change.

  • Provide visibility of scope, prioritisation and progress through a feature backlog, effort and business value metrics, featuring burn and sprint goal tracking.
  • Manage and track sprint progress against budgeted hours and schedule, maintain sprint flow by removing blockers and bottlenecks, focusing on goals, communicating any potential risks, recommending solutions and resolving more complicated project issues.
  • Develop and implement continuous process improvements and best practice.
  • Facilitate agile rituals; sprint planning, showcases, retrospectives, daily stand-ups.
  • Cultivate and encourage a culture of agility and openness and implement agile best practices.
  • Initiate, develop and maintain strong, effective internal and external networks that are relevant to meeting the completion of projects.
  • Work with the Product Owner/Business Analysts to identify and manage stakeholders, understand stakeholder interests and ensure that impacted stakeholders have a common understanding of new features or changes introduced by the solution.
  • Facilitate discovery workshops with business and technical stakeholders, story prioritisation and estimation with the Product Owner/Business Analysts or other stakeholders and perform story walkthroughs with project team members.
  • Ability to ensure effective escalation to Programme Manager by exception and where empowerment tolerances are exceeded.

Risk and Control: Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with our regulatory requirements and internal policies.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Proven experience and knowledge of one or more Agile frameworks as acquired through practical experience.

  • Experience as an Iteration Manager/Scrum Master across multiple domains.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, critical thinking skills, facilitation, consultative and communication skills with proven ability to influence outcomes.
  • Highly developed in verbal communication with the ability to deal with people at all levels of an organisation including liaising with a wide range of diverse IT & business stakeholders.
  • Demonstrable experience in stakeholder management, requirement gathering and analysis, business process development and user story development.
  • Demonstrable experience in agile methodologies with the ability to bring 'fresh' ideas to the team.
  • Experience of enabling services business' through technological enablement.
  • Experience of managing a functional release stream of work while collaborating with a Transition and change readiness stream within a shared services environment with strong focus on standardisation and optimisation.
  • Understanding of Agile behaviours, tools and techniques: e.g., collaboration, work breakdown, automated testing, Scrum, Kanban etc.
  • Ability to coach the team on agile principles and practices to grow agile maturity and become resilient and high performing through coaching/mentoring and demonstration of thought leadership.
  • Experience of effective escalation to Programme Manager by exception and where empowerment tolerances are exceeded.
  • Experience of data sovereignty, data custodian and data integrity requirements.
  • Experience of integration requirements and exposure to API, Direct Database & Integration broker.

Desired skills and experience:

  • Familiarity with ITIL Service Management Processes.

  • Experience and understanding of Cherwell/ServiceNow as it applies to services businesses.
  • Develop, monitor and communicate team reporting and metrics.
