About the role

Balfour Beatty has a rare and exciting opportunity for a Strategy Manager to join our growing team in London.

The Strategy Manager is responsible for running the day-to-day functions and processes of the Group Strategy function, working closely with and reporting to the Group Head of Tax and Corporate Finance. The role requires a combination of detailed knowledge and analysis of group markets and competitors with the ability to advise senior leaders across the Group and SBUs (including CEOs, CFOs, MDs and Head of Strategy) on Strategic decisions.

What you'll be doing

Group Strategy

The strategy manager is expected the manage strategy input into existing group wide processes (budget and plan, contract analysis etc) as well as pro-actively develop new areas for research. The strategy manager needs to have wide ranging business awareness and understanding of the dynamics of market environments to spot emerging trends etc.

  • Competitor analysis: ongoing analysis of Group competitor set and compiling ad-hoc reports on specific competitors.
  • Market analysis: ongoing market monitoring and ad-hoc reporting on specific events.
  • Technology analysis: ad-hoc reporting on the opportunities attached to specific technological developments in the industry.
  • New venture analysis: new market analysis and high-level business case creation.

Strategy Team Management

Manage junior Strategy, Group and SBU resources to deliver Strategy workstreams.

  • Directly manage 1 x Strategy Analyst, as well as any interns and/or graduates on the Emerging Talent programme.
  • Manage professional development of junior team members.
  • Manage additional internal or external consulting resource as/when required.

Group Communications Support

Provide analysis and Strategy-related content for Group Comms.

  • Create market, project, competitor and Group overview content for results presentations, Annual Reports and investor presentations working closely with Investor Relations.
  • Provide ad-hoc financial analyses not covered by Group FP&A (e.g. Contract Analysis).

SBU/BU Strategy Support

The strategy manager needs to influence SBU leadership of the relevance and importance of market analysis in key decision making. They also need to be able to communicate the output of strategy projects (in writing and verbally) in a clear and concise fashion.

  • Structure Strategy projects and identify resource requirements (including scoping projects that require external services), execute projects using Group Strategy and BU resources and produce and present reports to senior leadership.
  • Provide ongoing Strategy support, including production of markets section of CEO reports, budget strategy input and market sizing.
  • Provide ad-hoc support to major bids (e.g. Scape, CCS).

Corporate development

Acting as the key point of communication for incoming M&A enquiries. Provide analysis and project management support for M&A processes.

  • Process and evaluate incoming M&A requests to the Group.
  • Liaise with SBU/BU leadership where acquisition opportunities appear attractive.
  • Support in execution of buy-/sell-side processes as required.

Training

Run training sessions to provide SBU colleagues with the appropriate skills and tools to create effective Strategy documents.

  • Provide twice-yearly Introduction to Strategy training sessions to Manager-level colleagues from across the business.

Who we're looking for

  • Demonstrable experience gained in a strategy role, either in consultancy or inhouse.
  • Previous exposure to senior leadership
  • Ability to build strong relationships with colleagues from across all parts of the business. This covers the entire range of the organisation from the CEO and other Excom members to junior staff supporting projects
  • In-depth understanding of infrastructure and construction industries
  • Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • Outstanding communication skills both in writing and verbally
