Summary
Where: The Automotive Campus in Helmond and from the comfort of your own home
Domain: Power Electronics
Degree: Master's degree
Which team will you become part of?
At Lightyear, our Engineering Team is divided into different domains. While this varies from Aerodynamics up to Software and from Mechanical Engineering up to Solar Engineering you’ll become part of the Domain focused on Power Electronics.
Being part of the Power Electronics domain, means you’ll become part of a team surrounded by Power Electronics Engineers. From there one, you’ll be allocated to a particular system which will be a multidisciplinary group of engineers. For instance, you could work on the inverter as part of our in-wheel motors or you could focus on the converter which is a key component of our solar roof. Your colleagues are working on 40kW SiC air cooled motor inverters and resonant converter MPPTs. Simply put, we can assure you that you’ll become part of an intrinsically motivated team because every team member chooses to join Lightyear’s mission. At Lightyear, people don’t settle for less and that’s what you’ll feel during your internship!
Your personal mission
In order to properly tag you along onto your personal mission, we’ll firstly provide you with some background context. Since the Lightyear One is a solar car, it can produce energy instead of only consuming it. Imaginably, this comes along with a different architecture that affects the Power Electronics as part of our highly complex system. Since we’re keen on extreme efficiency (which we consider as performance) you’ll work with the latest technologies like SiC and GaN semiconductors to achieve our extreme efficiency specs.
While this vacancy can be considered as an open application, together with you we’d like to find out in what way you can contribute to Lightyear’s mission. Obviously, this will be Power Electronics related. Depending on your own preferences we’ll try to find the most suitable assignment technically to make sure you grow as a Power Electronics Engineer.
Requirements in order to achieve your personal mission
Be aware, being an intern at Lightyear isn’t just an internship. You’ll be approached as an actual engineer and that requires some skills. Especially given the fact that you’ll join a start-up where little is set in stone. Therefore, it’s key that you can relate to the following things:
Furthermore, you’re obviously specializing into the field of Power Electronics. You’ve finished a Bachelor’s degree and you’re currently in between your Bachelor’s and Master’s, halfway through your Master’s or you would consider an internship at Lightyear as your closing chapter. We’re open for both; a regular internship or a graduation project.
What do we offer
In addition to a challenging (graduation) internship you also have the opportunity to work for a company with a real, honest and ambitious mission. In this way you have the opportunity to make a huge impact on the future of mobility! In addition, we also offer:

“I started with my Electrical Engineering master’s internship at Lightyear in 2020 as part of the Drivetrain team, followed by a graduate internship directly in 2021 as part of the Motors team. The things I value most at Lightyear are how honest and open-minded the people at Lightyear are. No idea is too crazy. On top of that, the outline sketched in the vacancy is true. Yes, you are indeed part of the team! No, you’re not working on some side project that nobody cares about. Yes, you can pitch ideas and be bold! Yes, it’s really people first here! Yes, people actually care to help you out (and you should not be afraid to ask). From the start, it has felt like a warm welcome and an enjoyable place to work, and it still feels like that after more than half a year. Both the people and the mission give me energy everyday. And of course, I learn a lot about electrical engineering, power electronics and motors.” - Jeroen Goudswaard
At Lightyear we are building an electric car that charges itself. From our experience at Solar Team Eindhoven, we know this is only possible starting from scratch. At Lightyear we bring together a multidisciplinary team of highly motivated engineers, designers, and visionaries to challenge the status quo. Write the story with us!
"Lightyear is an exceptional team that puts together people from all over the world with the same goal of creating a meaningful positive impact in our society. I felt welcome from the very first day and working with such motivated engineers gives me the energy I need to do my best every day."
"Lightyear is een geweldig bedrijf om voor te werken. Het voelt voor mij meer als familie dan een werkgever. Klinkt misschien een beetje heftig, maar het is zo. Je maakt makkelijk vrienden op werk: iedereen is vriendelijk, behulpzaam en zo gemotiveerd om echt een verschil te maken in de wereld.”
