Working at Lightyear is a unique experience. You get the opportunity to work for a company with a pure and meaningful mission. A mission that will make a positive and lasting impact on future generations.

What will you do as Senior Vehicle Test Engineer?

By relentlessly testing our vehicles you make sure that Lightyear creates legal, safe, super-efficient, reliable and strategically fit-for-purpose products for our target customers.

So, what are your tasks & responsibilities you ask? Have a look at the bullets below. This will hopefully give you an idea:

  • Understand and support the vehicle project plan and the vehicle attribute and systems’ tuning, calibration and test deliverables.
  • Plan testing activities both internally and externally, including managing stakeholder requirements
  • Lead preparation and execution of test trips in various locations; managing the team, adapting the test plan when necessary, and delivering results
  • Keep all prototype vehicles running according to timing, maintain their configuration and fix them quickly. You make sure all vehicles are optimally used 24 hours/day.
  • Set up and coordinate objective and subjective testing activities for vehicle level tests: on rolling roads, at proving grounds, in vehicle cells and on public roads
  • As an expert of the Drive Team you will conduct vehicle milestone preparations and drive evaluations in various locations
  • Support updates, fixes and troubleshooting of all test vehicles
  • Help develop vehicle level test cases, ensuring repeatable and reliable results
  • Investigate test failures and create meaningful test reports, concerns and improvement proposals for the engineering teams
  • Support other team members by sharing your knowledge, lead the team in best practices, and help develop other team members skills alongside your own

So what does a typical day look like?

Early in the morning you drive together with some colleagues (e.g. a safety officer, test driver, car mechanic and a system architect) to a third party proving ground with one of the proto vehicles in the trailer. Once arrived at the location you start by briefing the team, to go through the list of testing activities of that day and check for any unclarities within the team.

After you finish the first couple of tests in the morning, a failure in the propulsion control software is found that disables further testing. You make a call to the responsible software engineer in the office to understand what is going on. You examine the car using canalyser and send them the data. After evaluation they tell you to change SW settings using specific control software. After the fix you continue with the other tests.

You have your lunch together with the system architect and safety officer to revisit today's test plan and discuss safe vehicle usage. Next you have a call with an external test facility to arrange the test plan for another upcoming test trip.

Once at home, you write a quick summary of today’s activities and mail that to the people involved from multiple systems. Tomorrow you’ll be working on post processing the data and reporting, as well as writing a concern against the faulty SW functionality you found.
