Working at Lightyear is a unique experience. You get the opportunity to work for a company with a pure and meaningful mission. A mission that will make a positive and lasting impact on future generations.

What will you do as an Electro Magnetics Engineer?

First, let us give you some context. Within Lightyear, some of our technologies are being designed in-house and some are being either partly or completely outsourced. Referring to this principle, we’ve decided to co-design our permanent magnet products together with our design partner. While we decide upon the architecture, the topology and requirements, it’s up to our design partner to engineer and deliver accordingly.

Imaginably, this comes along with a continuous loop of iterating and that’s where you come in. As an Electro Magnetics Engineer you’ll be considered as the subject matter expert towards both your internal as well as your external stakeholders.

For instance, internally you’ll be given high-over requirements by the Drivetrain Architect w.r. to the torque requirements for the in-wheel motor to achieve a certain performance. However, to enable our design partner to properly work on those requirements and specifications this needs to be converted to electromagnetic specifications as well. It’s up to you to decide what particular parameters need to be taken into account to make sure the permanent magnet products eventually work

On the other hand, externally, you’ll constantly challenge our design partner as a subject matter expert. While being in the loop with their team and deliverables, it’s up to you to both review and challenge their progress. Occasionally, you’ll plot their deliverables on your own analysis. Later on, by the time our permanent magnet products are at a certain level of maturity, you’ll check in on electromagnetic specifications by setting up tests to validate and verify the outcome on our designs.

To give you a more clear idea of what you’re responsible for you’ll find your tasks & responsibilities listed below:

  • You will answer all electromagnetic related questions with your electromagnetic expertise.
  • Most likely, you’ll work on;
  • Model development and data analysis in Matlab/Simulink
  • FEM analysis
  • Drivetrain performance engineering
  • Motor Control Simulations
  • Requirement & specification writing
  • You will possess practical knowledge about manufacturing, cost engineering and the relation between simulation and practice.
  • You’ll put these two together by eventually looping test results back into your simulations. While you won’t test yourself, you will support our test engineers in their set-up to make sure proper data is being collected. Ultimately, to assess its performance and functionality from an electromagnetic point of view.

Would you consider yourself being our new Electro Magnetics Engineer while reading the context, tasks & responsibilities as described above? Let’s see if you have what it takes!

What do we expect from an Electro Magnetics Engineer?

In order to succeed in the dynamic world of Lightyear; pro-activity, professionalism, communication and adaptability are crucial. We are looking for someone with an ambitious attitude who learns from the past but who is especially open to transforming new developments or ideas into the ‘tried and tested’ of the future! You thrive on working team based, but working independently every now and then shouldn’t be an issue.. You are flexible and can work under pressure. Furthermore, we are looking for someone with:

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related
  • 5-10 years of full time relevant experience
  • Strong fundamental knowledge of electric motors and drive system analysis, modelling and control
  • In-depth understanding of torque control techniques such as field oriented control and direct torque control
  • Advanced electromagnetic design skills
  • Experience in FEM Motor analysis (would be considered a bonus if you’re familiar with Altair Flux and/or ANSYS Maxwell)
  • Experience in Matlab + Simulink

Personally, you bring along a precise and analytical mind-set. You don’t fear challenging people either internally or externally. Furthermore, you’re able to deal with tight timelines.

What can you expect from Lightyear?

In addition to a challenging role we also offer:

  • A high degree of freedom and independence in your role
  • A role within a multidisciplinary team consisting of highly motivated, inquisitive and talented people with a broad diversity of experience
  • A role at one of the fastest growing technical companies in the Netherlands with tremendous potential
  • 40 vacation days per year
  • An interesting and balanced pension through Zwitserleven that is in line with the mission of Lightyear
  • The ability to participate via shares and to be involved in the growth and success of Lightyear
  • In addition to a dynamic working environment, there is time for relaxation during our already epic Friday afternoon drinks
  • A diverse & inclusive culture driven by trust which results in the opportunity to work remotely. UK & German contracts are in place and more are yet to come!

At Lightyear we are building an electric car that charges itself. From our experience at Solar Team Eindhoven, we know this is only possible starting from scratch. At Lightyear we bring together a multidisciplinary team of highly motivated engineers, designers, and visionaries to challenge the status quo. Write the story with us!
