WHAT WILL BE YOUR ROLE?

In modern warfare mines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED’s) pose a serious threat against the occupants of military vehicles. The shock caused by an explosion under a vehicle, a so-called Underbelly Blast (UBB), has a high potential for significantly injuring the vehicle occupants.

The NATO standard STANAG 4569 requires that the injury risk of these occupants is assessed using a full scale vehicle test. During such test a 50th percentile Hybrid III Anthropomorphic Test Device (50th HIII) is used to simulate an average human male inside the vehicle.

The 50th HIII represents the 50th percentile male occupant and was originally developed for automotive frontal crash conditions. However, the main loading direction of an UBB is vertical. Successive NATO research task groups have developed injury criteria and tolerances for the 50th HIII under these vertical load conditions using automotive and aviation references.

However, modern military vehicles, especially troop carriers, transport a wide range of passengers varying from small females to large males. This even includes civilians. Because of this, there is a demand for injury risk predictions for non-50th percentile male occupants.

In this assignment you will be developing the injury tolerances for the 5th and 95th percentile HIII. To do so, you will be investigating the scaling techniques that can be used to scale the injury tolerances. The bases for the scaling techniques is linked to the scaling underlying the FMVSS208 standard (NHTSA standard crash assessment) and previously applied tolerances for life boats. Your focus will be on the lower leg, pelvis, lumbar and cervical spine.

You will also be evaluating and validating your results in relation to criteria and tolerances for real humans. This will be based on injury criteria available in literature and from numerical human body models.

During this project you will be collaborating with biomechanics and blast experts from TNO and from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

  • You are available for an internship of at least 6 months.
  • You have a solid understanding of mathematics and biomechanics.
  • You are an analytical and innovative thinker.
  • Good communication skills in English are expected.
